Our practice uses locums twice a year, Last years rate was £12 hr. On top of that we have to pay the locum agency £20 daily. Although this is considered to be a quite high priced area, the fees do not vary much.

If you are not usuing a agency then you should charge more.

I used to change my rates after 8pm as I figured the "normal" working day for most practices runs until about 7.30ish and it would put them off if I was on say 11-7 and they had to pay me extra after 5.30pm. I also used to charge extra at weekends but not for Saturday mornings as several of the places I went did this as part of their normal working week (ie 8.30-1pm was normal but if I did a full day somewhere classed as out of hours, the whole day was at the higher rate). My rates were £12 normal hours and £15 out of hours but this is probably a bit out of date now as I set the prices 2.5yrs ago (seemed to be the general going rate at the time) and don't locum anymore.
