I'm divorced and my son has autism, which is why I had to give up work originally.
I have no family nearby and have to drive my son to a special school an hours drive away from my house.

I worked at the PDSA and worked 2 and a half days job share. In my current job I requested to go down from 40 to 30 hours and work Mon to Friday 8.30-2.30pm so I can pick my daughter up from school. It works at my current practise as the nurses get their full lunch break as I always cover them and also try to clean prep room and theatre by the time they come back. Good luck with the search.

RE: Is anyone part time?

I've contacted all the practices within 40 miles of me across 3 counties. Only had one reply, to say no jobs available. I've offered volunteering too but I can't live on nothing. I'd rather be full time but as I have no one to do the four hour school run I'm a bit stuck.

It's not even a case of getting a child minder. My son is 15 but has autism. There's literally no one he can go to after school until 7.30pm.

I've put my name down with the agencies and am doing cpd courses to brush up my knowledge.

Keeping my fingers, toes and eyes crossed in hope.

Thanks for everyone's input though.

RE: Is anyone part time?

Hi - why don't you get in touch with clinics near your son's school, and see if any of them would like an extra nurse on board for a few hours a day during the week? Check online and make a list of all clinics in the area - if that works out you could minimise your driving, be near to his school, and have some work during his school hours.

Get your CV ready and phone them - speak to the practice manager or head nurse, or senior vet - maybe also pop into see them when you have your CV ready. Suggest yourself as an additional nurse for ops hours say 10-2, or suggest dedicated nurse clinics within the hours available in your schedule. Or jobshare as you mentioned. You could suggest starting as locum and seeing how it goes? There could well be clinics out there that really need another person on board but not full-time, or cannot afford full-time, but a part-time offer coming their way might make them be more open-minded.

You never know what might come about. It's true that many practices are not keen on part-time nurses - in my view very short-sighted ... but I do know of nurses who have found part-time work by visiting local practices and having a chat with them.

Good luck, welcome to pm if any questions about locum work :)

RE: Is anyone part time?

I have found it much harder to get part time work since living in the North of England.
This is my experience too. I ended up working two full 11 hour shifts per week as being 'part-day' with a need to leave just seemed to upset everyone...

I agree with the flexibility that locuming brings. Plus, excepting an emergency situation, you seem to have more power/sway and team understanding when you decide to actually leave on time!

At my current practice are have 2 part time nurses and it works well for us, although sorting the rota out is a nightmare!
