I've also used sweetcorn in a wee dog which worked well. I think you really just need to be careful with oxalates in small breed dogs - I tend to explain to the owners but not worry so much with Labradors etc.

Carrot's definitely aren't benign but unless the diet is really strictly controlled I tend not to see too many issues with it, but I do tend to underestimate required calories bc most owners aren't honest about the amount of exercise their pets get!

RE: What would you bulk out a diet with if needed

but in relation to feeding the same amount of food which the cabbage or carrots replaces which has the higher calorific value? I still use both and have seen some good results and for people who cannot afford the obesity type diets this is the best option I have found. I think with some dogs you have to be a wee bit careful with the cabbage but it is mostly well tolerated.

One of my best weight loss clients used to grate a carrot and used chappie for the higher fibre values and her flophound beagle 20kg+ (could barely walk and had heart issues) the last time I saw him was a very trim 12kg.
