I'm considering using Laser therapy to see if it will help my 8.5 year old Lab with his elbow dysplasia.
I've no first hand experience of using it and wondered if those of you who have used it have had much success?
There doesn't seem

RE: Laser therapy reviews

Yes my main aim is to try and manage him without NSAIDS but he is a large dog (not fat just big build!!)so i think that will work against him. But definitely worth a go by the looks of it. I will check out the website. Thank you!

RE: Laser therapy reviews

Hi

We do laser therapy on a lot of dogs and cats with OA. Majority of cases have seen improvement all being very slight.

Examples are I have a old cat that suffers with OA in his hip and spine. He is a very sensitive sole so is not on any pain relief and has been sick when trying cartrophen injections so Laser for them was a last resort. He certainly has not become a kitten again but I warned them that this will not happen. He does however jump onto the sides, back of the sofa and the bed which is a small but great improvement. Even though they now have to make sure they put ALL food away and can't leave anything on the side as he can now get to it!

We have also had some dogs come off NSAIDS completely which is good but again it is subjective.

Myself and another nurse are in the process of starting senior pet clinics and with them have put together a mobility questionnaire for owners to fill out so we know what problems they think there dog is having etc. Within that is a mobility score card which the owner answers and then after a certain treatment, whether it be cartrophen course, NSAIDS or laser therapy course they answer the same questions again so its a way of telling if there is any improvement.

My own dog suffers with OA and my mum looks after the dogs a lot for me. When I tried laser therapy with her I wish I hadn't told my mum so she could then say if there was an improvement without knowing we had done the laser if that makes sense?

If you are on Facebook there is a fab page called Canine Arthritis Management. Some great hints and tips on there https://www.facebook.com/CAMarthritis/

Good luck and hope it works!

RE: Laser therapy reviews

Great, thanks everybody. Looks like it is worth pursuing. I appreciate it may not work for him but if i could reduce or eliminate the need for NSAIDS then that would be ideal. NSAIDS are great but not for long term use if at all possible.

I'll let you know how i get on!

RE: Laser therapy reviews

I have seen lots of dogs come off their pain relief after laser therapy and owners swear they are so much happier and more active. Equally I have seen many dogs with no change. It is very subjective and in all honesty I am not entirely sure there isn't a placebo type element to it. However if the cost is reasonable it is definitely worth a try, and if the theories are correct then it should definitely help with pain. Make sure they do both legs though, including the one that is unaffected but will compensate for the affected leg.

RE: Laser therapy reviews

Hi Juliet, it depends on what category laser is used.

Klaser is fantastic for elbow dysplasia. It's a category 4 therapeutic laser and is the highest class on the market.

I use it along with hydrotherapy, we get very beneficial results, this can vary for dog to dog and severity of condition, but generally does improve clinical condition as well as providing pain relief.

Klaser is also very beneficial on people! I have used it after having 4ruptured disc hernication L2-S1 and can certainly v for the benefits of it!!

it really helps with nerve pain too.

hope this helps.
