Hi Arlo,

So these are the three topics I would suggest.

1) Do people use pain scoring systems? If so, which do they use and how do they think it has affecited their clinical practice and patient welfare?

2) Are people actively monitoring patient temperature? If so, what technique are people using and what measures are people taking to prevent/correct abnormalities?

3) What patient monitoring are people using/have available? If not using equipment available e.g. Doppler, what are the obstacles that mean people aren't using them?

Reading some of the issues further up the page. There are a lot of issues that could be dealt with by taking a look at human healthcare and how they deal with things. Such as consent, conflict resolution etc.

With regards to advanced imaging I think there should be more courses created for nurses to progress and be able to undertake CT & MRI scans. There are a few courses but most courses are aimed at vets.

Thank you ... and could you, please! Maybe post the three most important/topical aspects of anaesthesia / analgesia which you think everyone would benefit from sharing ideas, knowledge and experience about.

From the other suggestions, here is a list of possibles, with slightly tweaked titles in some cases, for clarity:

I think that is a very interesting subject for debate, but I'm not sure that it would quite work as one that everyone could share tips/knowledge etc about, and therefore claim as CPD.

Rachel Woodcock great list, but I few that I thought needed to be a bit 'tighter':

blood transfusions. Do you mean how to perform them? Or the ethics?
Pain scoring - I have included this one in the list above as 'best practice pain scoring technique' - is that a better title (ie forgive my ignorance, but is there a good and bad way of doing it!)
telephone triage - I wondered whether this is too 'small' a subject for discussion. But that may again just be showing my ignorance!
care of exotics - thought perhaps this was a bit too broad, and perhaps we should focus on one aspect of exotic care, or one species? Thoughts?
Legalities of consent form - again, wondered if this was too 'small' a subject?
delegation/management - a bit of crossover with other subjects, but have included this one as people management / team-building

Alison Clare Hickman - again, thank you for suggestions. I think I have included all yours in one way or another (again, some crossover with other suggestions)

Ann McAleer - thank you too! I think your suggestions largely 'fit' within other topics suggested - ie career progression, inc outside clinical nursing, fits within 'How to get ahead in veterinary nursing'. Have included wound management.

If you have any thoughts about my comments above, please post! Or any other suggestions.

Otherwise I'll post this list (plus any other additions) for a vote, later in the week.

Hi Arlo, I think this is a brilliant idea!

All of the suggestions above would be really interesting. I was thinking topics like

Career progression - outside of clinical nursing e.g. teaching or repping etc.

wound management - what's new and what works?

how to support students

Lay staff - what everyone thinks they should and shouldn't be doing... and possibly how to tackle ANAs or VCAs that are doing too much already in a low key way?

Hope this little bit of blood helps out of this stone

Funnily enough, I'm just working on another project that ties in with this - more news soon!

ali I totally agree with you! Nurses can be quite undervalued and skills not used to their full so would be really interesting to see what tasks other nurses do in practice. I also agree that we do need more specific clarification from the rcvs regarding schedule 3 and when I filled in my questionnaire I suggested literally listing tasks that nurses can and can't do and also lay members of staff so that everyone is aware of what they should and shouldn't be doing

Thanks Ali - that's a very good idea. I was going to say that perhaps it would be better to wait till the RCVS Schedule 3 consultation has finished, because the rules might change, but then again that could take a long time ...

What specific areas of clinical care do you (or anyone else) think it would be helpful to share tips, experience, etc.? Anaesthesia? Dietary? Nurse clinics? Any more specific aspects of these? Something else altogether.

Hey Arlo,

Just had an interesting and educational debate on a thread about RVN administration of 1st vaccines and KC (started off as a "can I administer KC vaccine?"). So, perhaps we could have a debate about who does what in practice, regarding vaccinations and share info. I certainly learned something today, thanks to Apache (and I sit happily corrected and reassured I could do more than I do, in fact), with VS direction.

This particular thread really has me thinking about how much more I could do as an RVN if the vets understood what we are authorised to do if they direct it so.

Understanding and applying the Code of Professional Conduct seems to figure highly... perhaps a line by line dissection of that, even, so as to fully understand how it applies/what it intends to mean. Could get a group request up to the RCVS for clarifications we might decide we needed (well, we could ask...).
