I had the impression we couldn't administer KC but our practice is making it a SOP/RVN duty and I don't know how I feel about this because I don't know where I stand?

That can be given by a VN (even the first one). You could argue if they came in too young for first vacc the VS could authorise a VN to give first and second injection. So long as a clinical exam and 'authorisation' then a nurse can do it. The KC is clearly authorised at the first vaccine by the VS.

RE: RVNs sch 3 Vaccinations- KC?

Hmm - now I am confused!
subsequent vaccination
but is it? It's a novel vaccination, surely? I can see what you mean though, as the vet has examined the animal at the first vaccination...Oh heck

RE: RVNs sch 3 Vaccinations- KC?
he subsequent vaccination some two weeks or so later (close in time to the first vaccination) is usually authorised by the veterinary surgeon at the time of the first vaccination (directed by the veterinary surgeon when the animal is under his or her care and when the clinical assessment is carried out), and therefore the administration of this second vaccination and all dealings may be through a veterinary nurse or student veterinary nurse at the practice
Clearly the VS authorised the KC at 2nd vacc when seen for first vacc, so this is fine to be a VN job.

I don't know if you've seen the recent VDS newsletter regarding unlicensed use of booster/KC at time of rabies boosters? I can see a lot of animals that got all 3 coming in to see the vet, getting their rabies and then back 2 weeks later for booster/KC. I can see nurses doing a lot MORE kennel coughs and boosters.

The wording is clearly to avoid nurse only boosters with no vet input. So long as seen recently and its authorised then you are 100% covered.

RE: RVNs sch 3 Vaccinations- KC?

I never felt as though I was compromising my integrity by doing so, and I do still think that the above info can be interpreted in one of two ways.
Show them the relevant VS Act S3 section? I have refused to give KC before now! It is difficult to cross a determined VS but I remain polite and resolute at all times. I won't compromise my professional integrity or limits so I have 'educated' my VS accordingly!

I am absolutely not criticising you btw - am recognising how difficult it can be to stand up for oneself when a decision is made by a boss or VS (or both) that one feels conflicted about. However, this is one of the costs of being a professional nurse... we must be fully aware what we can and cannot do in law (as one example) and educate other professionals and lay people accordingly.

Gosh I sound like a school marm - soz, just giving you (hopefuly) some useful guidance is all!

xxx

Ali h

https://www.rcvs.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/code-of-professional-conduct-for-veterinary-surgeons/supporting-guidance/delegation-to-veterinary-nurses/

Vaccination of companion animals

18.10 To give a first vaccination with a POM-V medicine, the animal must be under care of the prescribing veterinary surgeon (see the supporting guidance on the meaning of ‘under his care’) and the veterinary surgeon must carry out a clinical assessment (see the supporting guidance on the meaning of ‘clinical assessment’) and then the veterinary surgeon may administer, or under his or her direction, a veterinary nurse or student veterinary nurse may administer (see paragraph 18.5). If the veterinary surgeon is to certify the vaccination, the certification rules apply (see the supporting guidance on certification) and generally he or she must do it him or herself or witness it done.

18.11 The subsequent vaccination some two weeks or so later (close in time to the first vaccination) is usually authorised by the veterinary surgeon at the time of the first vaccination (directed by the veterinary surgeon when the animal is under his or her care and when the clinical assessment is carried out), and therefore the administration of this second vaccination and all dealings may be through a veterinary nurse or student veterinary nurse at the practice, provided the veterinary surgeon is not intending to certify this vaccination. Nevertheless, it is helpful for a veterinary surgeon to be on the premises at the time the vaccine is administered to the animal, to be able to assist in the event of the animal suffering an adverse reaction.

18.12 For booster or subsequent vaccinations not close in time to the first vaccination, the advice is the same as for the first vaccination (see paragraph 18.10).
