I am currently an ANA at a very busy hospital and am waiting to be trained by the company as a veterinary nurse when a place becomes available. This is my dream and something I want to do more than anything. I am a very hard worker

RE: Really struggling as a new employee
"nobody knows what I do until I stop doing it"
We are one week into a new rota, brought in by yours truly. Whilst it was ok for me to do reception and front of house and cleaning for a whole month plus with no respite because nobody else wanted to do it. My little cherubs are moaning like hell they don't want a whole weeks stint on reception. This has worked really well for me because having 1 person responsible for an area for a week it becomes absolutely obvious to others who is and who isnt pulling their weight. Nobody is too good or too important or too special to clean in my book - just to prove it where I work - I am the only qualified nurse with two VCA's and an ANA.

I did once ( half jokingly ) tell a vet he could only be excused from washing his own cup if he could produce a note from his mother . He must have been in a good mood that day because he didn't take my head off. It did the trick - he took it on board and started washing his own cup without me having to say anything else (and he did later produce a note from his mother as well which made me smile)

Will second what Alison has said - take care of yourself if you want to chat pm me through the site and we can see if we can cut this down to size a bit for you

Hi WelshyNurse, I can go above her and speak to the practice manager. I have a feeling from other complaints made from other staff that she often says have you not tried to get it sorted it out amongst yourselves? I know she will say have I talked to the head nurse but beyond that I don't know what she will say. Maybe she will be wonderful but then again she take the view I can't cope and will never put me forward to do the nursing course.

There is one person at the same level as me but she is constantly off sick and when she is at work she says she doesn't want to be there and only lasts a couple of hours. I don't know enough about her personal situation to comment but I do know how it affects me. It leaves me picking up the slack and exhausted X

RE: Really struggling as a new employee

Is there anyone you can speak to other than the head nurse? It means a lot that you think I will be a good nurse. I think I really do need to take your advice and from now step back and do only what I can. I think maybe I've been enabling them to get away with not doing enough at the detriment of my health and this needs to stop. Im tempted too to finally take a weeks annual leave and show them how much I've been doing! Hard working, dedicated, a devil for the cleaning (important!) and someone who goes the extra mile. My second response is, stand back a bit and allow (yes, allow), your team members to do their thing in their way e.g. the kennel cleaning and concentrate on another vital job in your routine. If the kennel cleaning isn't up to scratch, that is not your job to redo or takeover. Head nurse needs to see this and take charge of rectifying the matter. That's her job. If you always step in then the job gets done and Head Nurse just sees and hears you moaning you have to much to do rather than seeing what others in the team are NOT doing. Make sense? You have to protect yourself which sounds selfish, but it really is not☺

keep the faith xxxx
