I am a second year student doing the level three diploma and have an assignment that includes nursing clinics. particularly to continue patient compliance.

Also we are just in the early stages of setting up nursing clinics in my practice so any info would be great!

Thinking about an area you are interested in and setting a clinic up based around that is a good way to make clinics work. If you are interested in dermatology, join the Veterinary Nursing Dermatology Group and we plan to provide lots of support in setting up dermatology clinics.

Hi,

Wow, you've got lots of experience under your nursing belt, so you'd certainly be really well set up from that aspect to run clinics.

The reason I ask is that I think if nurse clinic setup is to be succesful, you need to have team backing and practice support. Now even if you don't feel you have that now, there are things you can do to try and create this, and turn it into a bit of a practice project rather than a one-man-band. That way you can, as a team, decide on what clinics you want to do, how you're going to implement them, man them, monitor and troubleshoot them, promote them etc etc. I wouldn't recommned taking on all that by yourself.

I have a great passion for nurse clinics and what they can achieve for both nurses and practices (and clients and their pets!), and I tutor ONCORE's nurse clinics course.

When I say working to get the team on board - well this is where planning can come in because we help you work through all the aspects (as above) of nurse clinics, so that you have a clear plan to take to the practice leader/head nurse, and our course helps you achieve that.

If you can't get approval for the course there are still lots of things you can do such as looking at how you can achieve all those steps.

For example:

What clinics do you want to run?

What are you going to include in the clinic? (protocols required!)

What staff do you have to run them?

Any specialist staff skills you can use (eg physio, nutrition, behaviour)?

What issues might you encounter and how can you deal with them?

What are you going to charge for them?

What equipment/literature/other materials might you need?

How are you going to promote them?

How are you going to keep tabs on whether they are a success?

etc etc

By planning out this sort of stuff and having a clear strategy, you are far more likely to get your practice leaders on board as they'll realise you're serious and you've thought it all through. Even better if the whole nursing team can sit down and work out this stuff, because then you'll get input from everyone...

Hi Jill - I am a registered nurse with 20 years nursing experience. I have run clinics in my previous practice where everyone was supportive and could see the importance of nurse clinics, sadly my current practice doesn't currently run any.

Unfortunately, I don't think she is.

I wrote a blog about becoming a better consulting nurse... Tips and hints how to from the absolute basics on up and covering communication skills etc. Might be useful as a starting point or frame work? I also set up and ran comprehensive and charged for Geriatric Health Clinics and have info on those as well. (Love those oldies, me!). Also held the usual behaviour, desensitisation, weight, mobility, preventative, wound management consultations as well, so u cud pick my brain if u want, what's left of it
