Try and link what they are currently studying with the tasks on their NPL. I used to do tutorial every 2 weeks to try and identify any problem areas where more training might be needed or even just to look back at a case they thought went well.

RE: Clinical Coaching

I found it handy to have the students scheme of work from college. You can then use this to tie your tutorials to the syllabus.

RE: Clinical Coaching

also if anyone has advice on the sorts of things the discuss in tutorials i would much appreciate it! You obviously then have the NPL part of the cc role to ensure completed etc. Also weekly tutorials to discuss problems or answer questions. I will read my students assignments also to make sure make sense!!

RE: Clinical Coaching

Hi everyone,

I'm about to become a CC and as it's been many a year since I qualified, I'm feeling a tad nervous. Am i right in understanding that the CC role is mainly a mentor? ie going over what has been taught at college that week and assisting with the NPL etc? I'm doing my training in Dec so I'm sure all will become clearer then.

Any advise/pointers would be gratefully received.

TIA

I have a consult bias role and rarely monitor GA or do IP care but our ops and IP nurses are amazing in their roles so they has been teaching my student that area and i've been overseeing.

Also sit down with them early to decide on what their learning preferences are. Do they find book leaning easier than hands on practical to start. Adapt accordingly.

I was also very upfront with my student saying that I am new to to CCing so if she feels any areas are lacking and she isn't getting what she needs to be honest about it so we can address it together.

RE: Clinical Coaching

Try and think how you would have liked to be treated (or maybe were treated) also try to remember areas which you found particularly difficult and any tips you were given or rhymes etc you developed for things.

Be friendly and approachable, if something isn't going in take a break walk away from it and seek help from another coach who may give you a tip on educating/training that area. Remember everybody learns differently, some verbally, some practically, some with diagrams.
