Hello, currently working in a refferal hospital status that also does first opinion. We have 10 nurses, 3 who are part time.
We are currently struggling with our rota to have multiple people here at times we need it (evenings mostly

RE: Legal working hours / rota issues!!

Is there anyway that you can change your night nurse shift so that they soley work the night only and not the day shift before or after?

We have just had a major change to our rota and now do 1:8 weeks of nights followed by a week off and it is a lot easier we work 7pm-8am with rest period between 12-6 depending on checks and the amount of inpatients doesnt always work (like tonight i have meds every hour til 4am to give)

Failing that before we started this rota our old rota meant we worked 1pm-7pm then on call over night starting again at 1pm the following day, we worked 3 of these shifts one week then two the following week with a 3 week gap.

With the amount of nurses you have on your team it would be useful to look at the times where you are the busiest and work your rota around this maybe if possible the following day off following your on call

RE: Legal working hours / rota issues!!

Hi,

I came across your post which is similar to a problem I am having at the moment. I was wondering how you got on? Is your issue resolved, have you found a solution? If so....how?!

Working Time Directive says no more than an average of 48 hours per week, averaged out over 17 weeks. So doesn't apply unfortunately.

with regard to changing what your contracts say, as far as I am aware, it depends on what is considered reasonable and does not constitute a material change (unreasonable). You need to speak to a legal expert. Try BVNA legal dept?

re no breaks for night nurse... Refer to the Government website.
