Just wanted a bit of advice. I have been asked to dog-sit for a client for 6 weeks when they go to America - they have 2 chocolate labradors and a northern innuit. One of the labs is one of my weight clinic patients, which is partially

RE: House/dog sitting

I have been asked many times in the past, but always said no as there are too many risks involved.

You may find your employer won't allowed it anyway.

RE: House/dog sitting

i have always said i will always say - never mix work and private life.

what if something goes wrong? have you got insurance?

also the whole thing of the pressure you will be under for the whole 6 weeks and more!

i personally have been asked for my expertise for house sitting ill animals that are registered with the practice or just animals that i have had a lot of hands on with the owners in the practice.

i have just made my excuses and left the subject well alone.

its entirely up to you, but please be careful.

RE: House/dog sitting

Hi Ali,

Thank you so much for your informative reply to my post. There are lots of factors to think about, which is why I want to ensure I weigh it all up and ensure it is going to be worth my while. In the back of my mind, I know it will probably be a bit inconvenient, but I think that if it all goes well, it's a good gig to have, especially if they are likely to use me again in the future. I had considered most of your suggestions, and would ensure that I had something in writing to stipulate my specific obligations and what to do in case of an emergency.

I'll wait and see what others say, but thanks again!

RE: House/dog sitting

Just some thoughts...

1. insurance?

2. tax implications?

3. have you told your existing employer? (You have a duty to do so in case of objection/conflict and get their permission)

4. Vet bills? What arrangements do you have re this with the owner? In case of PTS, what are your instructions?

5. I would ABSOLUTELY have a contract prepared and get it signed so you know what's what and so do they. This in case of any dispute / damage / issues and to keep it on a completely professional basis.

6. Neighbours aware? (Don't want the police called because they see a stranger entering the house or think you are a squatter!)

I agree with your partner - with all the costs of time and insurance etc - unless you are going to set up as an on-going business, is it worth it?! Sorry to burst your bubble...

Lastly, you sound like a lovely caring fabulous nurse. Hoo-Rah!!

Hth (albeit a raspberry - soz)
