It's one of those 'falls through the crack in the grate' issues where no one who SHOULD be responsible (council / police) wants to pay for the responsibility and we end up plugging the gap.

So, what were my remedies? I got very chatty and friendly with the Dog Warden and got her on-side, so much so that she would accept OOH calls from our practice 'in her own time' (we didn't overdo it). Absolutely was a "you scratch my back and I'll scratch" yours scenario as if she had dogs that were due to be PTS (overstayed their time in council , ahem, accommodation), we would go the extra 9 yards to advertise them on our FB page and see if we could find an adopter. We also got in cahoots with a local dog rescue centre too as they would be able to come out sometimes and collect them the next day to 'foster' until the Dog Warden could collect.

None of the get arounds were ideal but we did what we could, as I know you do. It's very frustrating, I agree.

At the end of the day though it's the dog (or indeed cat) that is the victim of our society. Poor paws.

Our dog wardens are less than fucking useless, even the 'new' numbers provided by the council, but after calling around we found that they just take them to the local police kennels anyway. We now phone that station directly if we have a stray that needs kennelling overnight - they're not always happy about it but they will take them.

RE: Dog Wardens

I think it depends on your local council but in our area if a dog is found outside of dog warden times the council have a dedicated vet/kennels that strays can be taken to (but there isn't anyone to go out and collect them). We used to be the councils OOH 'kennels' but could only take in the dogs if they'd been through the council first (it was a nightmare and so glad we no longer do it). The council should have an OOH/emergency number which you can give to clients (ours was the CCTV team I seem to remember!) - so definitely worth calling the council and finding out what they have in place!

RE: Dog Wardens

We do have an out of hours dog warden but only if you call them and report the dog before 8pm then they will come at some point in the night to collect it.
