I'm a new graduate and I'm suddenly thrown in the deep end at work for obesity clinics, developmental checks, etc. I'm terrified of giving out wrong advice!!! Many thanks y'all xx

RE: Nursing Clinics

I have always found veterinary diet companies really helpful. Hills in particular in the past have given a practice that i worked at a whole kit for setting up weight clinics. Give your rep a call, they should be more than happy to hand out help (and get their product selling!).

DIY things that you can do are taking photo's with grids set up on the wall and floors, to be able to keep a visual diary of (hopefully) the waist line etc returning! Owners respond really well to things like "loser of the month". Perhaps one could take inspiration from companies like slimming world, as after all most of the battle with patient obesity is client compliance, its them we need to keep motivated the most!

Hope this helps!

RE: Nursing Clinics

Royal Canin do fantastic obesity seminars if you can contact the rep (if your practice uses them) to see when they are holding another one.

RE: Nursing Clinics

there are lots of cpd events, webinars etc that talk through nursing appointment for all areas.

just keep reading and researching but also ask other nurses.

ask reps for advise and information, leaflets etc for you to use in the consults.

RE: Nursing Clinics

Does your practice sell obesity diets? Is it worth talking to your rep. We sell Hills and they have an informative online section for vets/nurses.

Our nurse checks are general ones, we do a nose to tail examination, eyes/ears/teeth, record weight skin/coat. Discuss neutering, worming/flea tx etc. Explain everything you are doing. In the early days we used tick sheets for the health check. They acted as a good prompt for us and also demonstrated to the owner what we had checked. Sometimes the owner might not be aware that you have checked something, which is another reason I talk through everything I do.

MSD produce a socialisation leaflet for puppy owners.
