I start my work experience on Wednesday and although I dont have cats or dogs, I do have rats (and they really dont need any help getting ill!)

must admit having read many reports on the use of these gels I have come to the conclusion they give a false sense of security as they are never as effective as they are claimed to be, admittedly I do have one in the emergency pack on the back of my bike and another in my handbag but they are really no substitute when soap and a tap is available

RE: How to prevent the spread of viruses etc to your own pets?

Where I work no uniform is allowed off the premises. We change into a clean uniform at work before we start and at the end of the day it goes straight in the wash bin when we change into our home clothes. The inpatients do not come into contact with outside clothes, gloves are worn when handling patients and all wards have gel dispensers in them to use between patients.

RE: How to prevent the spread of viruses etc to your own pets?

Thanks :) Im a little bit paranoid when it comes to the rats ATM for the last 8 months ive been the Vets atleast twice a month (often more!) which is emotionally (and financially!) killing me so anything I can do to reduce the risk is worth it :)

On the bright side, its thanks to the rats and their many ailments thats given me the motivation to actually follow my dream :)

RE: How to prevent the spread of viruses etc to your own pets?

my routine every night when I come in - throw a few biscuits in the food bowl which keeps at least one cat occupied (and possibly the other if he isnt out patrolling his patch against enemy insurgents), go straight into the bathroom and get out of the uniform and change into something clean. Uniform goes straight in washer. Whatever illnesses my various cats have had over the years I can't recall anything nasty I have passed on to them - with the exception of ringworm - and we never really established if they got it via me or I got it via them. Only once I am 'clean' do we do the proper meet and greet and 'the food bowl is empty - hurry up and fill it, I have RSPCA on speed dial' routine
