I was wondering if I could get some feedback.
In your practices do you get paid for OOH inpatient checks and how does this work in regard to charging the client?
I currently work as Head Nurse in a practice where the nursing staff are expected

RE: OOH Inpatient Night Checks

Les Punton appreciate your reply, thank you.

RE: OOH Inpatient Night Checks

Hi

We do a 1:5 weekend and 1 night through the week. We charge the client hospitalisation and get 40% of the per patient. Different level of charges depending on time spent/work done. Also a small fee for each extra check if needed, charged to the client. We have also just started a retainer which seems to be working well but this doesnt get charged to client.

When I've worked in practices where the nurses have to pop back to check on the inpatients, the normal policy has been:
-inpatient check charged to the client
-charged per patient
-the nurse receives a percentage of this fee
-the nurse is expected to spend a certain amount of time (say 10 minutes min) with each patient

That way the business, nurse and patient/s all benefit. And the owner knows their pet won't be on their own all night.

These visits were done on a rota/voluntary basis and shared out between all the nurses to make it fair (much like on call is often done). Also handy for nurses who want to make a bit of extra money, and takes some of the resentment out of spending part of their evening back at work.

I'd be interested to see how other practices go about this too
