Yes indeed. I'm not sure about the logic behind stinging entrepreneurial-sorts with yet more blinking tax.

Mornin' all

I have made some changes to the guide:

Juliet Drummond DAVN (med) RVN D32/33 - added your dog tip to new 'top tips' section at the end.

Samantha Flavell - changed the wording in the section about booking direct to say it is good when: "You are comfortable running your own books and paying your own tax, (if you don't have a book keeper, accountant or umbrella company to do that for you)."

Kirsty Pope - added your tip to the 'Top Tips' at the foot.

PolkaDotty - added this in the insurance section: "Note that some umbrella companies may provide certain types of insurance cover, such as public liability, as part of their service. Worth checking."

As regards the best way to get paid (umbrella / ltd company / self employed), that IS coming - sorry for the delay, but the company I chose to take advice on about this has scheduled it in for the end of this month.

Pokadotty. . . occurred to me... a thought for your consideration. There are two aspects to insurance;

Must have: Negligence

Recommended: Criminal & Disciplinary Procedures.

Check what cover you have and if it's for both YIPEE!! If not, you could make a decision whether you want the C&DP cover (e.g. to help represent you if a case was brought against you through RCVS...). VDS can help you if you decide to take it out. Costs around £50 p/annum.

So I've just started locuming again along with my permanent job (mortgages don't pay their self huh?) and found this guide really useful. I have found that my new umbrella company covers employees (contractors) for indemnity insurance inclusive of their contract. The website states: 'You are covered by the company's insurance policies for Employer and Public Liability Insurance, as well as Professional Indemnity Insurance (subject to specific high-risk sector limitations, for example Medical, Offshore Oil and Gas, etc'. Might be worth adding to the guide as I didn't realise and was about to source my own cover at a cost :)

hello again (Soz for delay...fell asleep in my dinner. Been a long one today ).

ok, per ur example: If present at the practice and awake I would work every OOH at 30p per hour. So, let's say from 8pm to 8am = 12 x 30p. £3.60 in total.

If not present but on call: then a flat fee as you have suggested. However, bear in mind how many hours you are on call for i.e. if it is a 12 hour cover period then ensure your flat fee is at least equal to your normal hourly rate! £200= £17 per hr appx and £350= £30 p/h appx on a 12 hour cover period. Yes, the flat fee stands alone in this example.

The other method is to charge your normal hourly rate for the period plus a flat fee e.g. 12 hrs at £15 (£180) plus say £90 for no call out or £180 for a call out. Max total therefore £360.

So say im on 15 p hour, and the practice run one in five weekends and one night a week. Where would you base you fees. I have been suggested the following

Try for £200 for the night and maybe £350 for the weekend? I would assume that is with out pay per hour

hiya, well it depends what your basic rate is! If it was me I'd double it for OOH and set a fee for on call 1. Higher amount for being called out and 2. Less for having to be available but not called out or 3. One fee mid-range that covers both eventualities. Then, if the option you choose doesn't jive with the practice, ski downwards in your negotiations. But don't be too quick to ski, give them time to consider it. Silence can work £££££££'s

As a locum nurse for many years now, I don't work near home ever....So making sure you get the practice to sort out suitable accommodation for me and my 2 dogs is a priority! Everyone who I have worked for has been great.....except the one job where I had a single bed in a consult room!!

I didn't know about the dosimeters from JAK so that is very interesting!

The section about booking independently it says about having to invoice yourself. I don't think you necessarily have to do this, as I use an umbrella company to invoice my independently booked work for me. I know you are going into this in more details soon though!
