I have worked in private practice before, but I have an interest in charity, wildlife etc so I started working as an SVN in a busy charity hospital. Lately (and I don't know if they are just having a bad run), but I have seen so many animals

RE: Charity work, help please :(
I have found that with limited diagnostics and treatment options, a lot of animals do get PTS.....when in private practice and with insurance they may have a few more options.
could you see it differently maybe? if the charity wasn't there then those animals probably wouldn't get seen at all, at least they are seen and if they are pts at least its ending suffering. I know its not easy but that is the way I had to see it to cope. I'm not going to tell you it gets easier because it doesn't really unless you stop caring (and I don't know about anybody else but I have never managed to do that - nor would I want to) if you can find your own way of handling it so that you could carry on nursing there how would that feel?

RE: Charity work, help please :(

Thanks everyone, at least I know it's not just me feeling like this.

Thing is my last private practice really knocked my confidence, hence leaving....and I am becoming a lot more confident in myself and my skills in this place, as well as working with lovely people. I just don't know whether I should leave or stick it for a bit.

I had a few days off and today was actually ok....maybe they were just going through a bad patch? I have found that with limited diagnostics and treatment options, a lot of animals do get PTS.....when in private practice and with insurance they may have a few more options.

Thanks for everyone that has replied.

RE: Charity work, help please :(

Exactly the reason I left charity practice...

its absolutely heartbreaking and I couldn't cope with it.. I also didn't want to normalise these things, or the lower veterinary standards. if you cant stick it - get out, you're not gonna be able to change things :(

RE: Charity work, help please :(

Feel free to give me a shout - was at BX for nearly 11yrs.
Personally, I had to leave as I had enough after 8 years of it and no change. Actually made me loose faith in the charity.

RE: Charity work, help please :(

Sounds like you are heading for or are already suffering compassion fatigue. Have a Google and you will probably find you symptoms match. You need to talk someone to share but need to practice self care - you can't care for others if you don't look after yourself too. Lots of self strategies out there for compassion fatigue.

Hope you find someone to talk to - your not alone - things do drag us down in this profession.
