I need some advice as i am not sure what to do. I handed my notice in at work 5 weeks ago and me and the head nurse used to be really good friends and due to personal reasons we had a disagreement but now its effecting my work ethics. I gave longer than my notice period as I wanted to try and give my boss a bit more time to find a nurse as I know they are quite scarce these days! I think I will be reducing my notice period to what is required to work then leave which means I would only have 3 weeks left.

RE: Leave earlier than notice?
and you have quite a bit of time after you have left to file the claim too!
3months minus 1 day - it sounds a long time but it isn't if you are needing to gather stuff together for an effective claim. Its a miserable situation to be in , is there no possibility of the pair of you burying the hatchet (ideally not in each other). I feel certain the RCVS mentions something about a professional treating another disparagingly.

RE: Leave earlier than notice?

Just something to note - when you have handed your notice in you are STILL EMPLOYED! and should be treated as such. for an employer to change the rules without discussion/ your duties without discussion, or to treat you differently could give you all the nice things you need for a constructive dismissal claim.. my advice - warn them of this and tell them you are recording everything ;) .. oh.. and you have quite a bit of time after you have left to file the claim too!

you just make sure you behave professionally at all times and just write everything down. trust me - they will have a word with her!

RE: Leave earlier than notice?

Can you request for your notice to be shortened?
Two approaches spring to mind:

1.

Arrange a formal meeting with her superior or above - but use the right reporting hierarchy to keep things professional and clear. State you want to discuss what's happening between you and your HN and that you wish to resolve matters to everyones' satisfaction.

Ask for someone you trust to be with you for support. As you know that other colleagues have already highlighted the problem then your management should already be aware and, hopefully, keen to stop the disruptive behaviours between you. If this is affecting your mental health, say so. If this is affecting your physical health, say so. Your boss won't want you to go off sick with stress or other anxiety related issues. There is of course the matter of harassment and potential bullying. Do you feel harassed or bullied? If you do, say so (with examples). Show that you are keen to get back on an even keel. It is very important that you emphasise the current state of affairs cannot continue.

It's possible your management may want you both to talk to one another in a supervised meeting to try and resolve matters. That would be a good idea as well.

2.

Alternatively, take a deep breath and offer an olive branch? We can all become a bit spikey and argumentative if we feel slighted and then can't hold it in; sometimes using an edge (this time her superiority as HN) to 'get back' and take some revenge (warranted or not). There are two sides to every coin so she might feel justified in her anger with you (this doesn't excuse her behaviour though).

So, perhaps an off-site meeting between the two of you over a coffee and cake would help resolve matters? Sometimes this is better than anything if you can both agree to move forwards and be civil with one another, (or even mates again?!), even if you agree to disagree over whatever it was you have fallen out over. I've overcome some outrageous misunderstandings with laughter, a friendly approach and an apology - this apology is for the UPSET a disagreement cause and not necessarily for what the disagreement was about... two entirely different matters in most cases.

I do hope you can sort it out between you; preferably amicably. Don't cross her off your 2017 Christmas card list just yet... Maybe approach it with a 'New Year and my best paws forward' invitation for a coffee?

Let us know how you get on!
