My husband has just been offered the job of a lifetime.....in Tasmania. We visited a few years ago and really loved it, so this is a great opportunity we can't pass up. However we have a 8 1/2 year old Newfoundland female

RE: Is it right to move Newfie to Australia?!

8 is a good age for a Newfie, Personally I'm not sure I could justify the stress involved and the length of time in a crate. If anything happened you would never forgive your self. As the above said i think you know the answer, hard as it must be.

RE: Is it right to move Newfie to Australia?!

Hiya,

A VN friend of mine shipped her Great Dane over from Australia to be with her when she worked in the UK; she admitted he had an absolutely horrible time of it during the journey, was extremely stressed and had behavioural issues related to travelling and being left in a crate thereafter. She put off returning to Australia with him, until she absolutely had to go back, because of it. Mr G was a much younger dog than your girl.

IMO I agree wholeheartedly she would be better off remaining in the UK especially since she has a trusted and loving home to go to, that she loves herself. I guess I would struggle more with this decision if neither of you had your lovely sister, but as she does...

I think you already know what you should do for her, don't you? However, I completely understand your heart over head struggles though...

On a slightly different tangent, my cousin currently lives in Australia and gets regular Skype sessions with the pets he left with family

in the UK. Apparently the cat is a fan of him making purring noises over the 'waves' and replies!

I wish you all the best for your travels and hugs from here to keep you all safe and well.

As hard as it is to leave her behind, I think as your sister loves her and taking her age into consideration then the descision is made really. If she were a younger dog then taking her would be an option although how hot is it in Tasmania for a breed used to the cold weather ??
