Thanks Claire Coulthard RVN - yes, I read that and my first thought was god how awful for them. My second was that I had a perhaps much closer shave than I realised at the time.

If I ever buy a new car and it's not the cheapest one in the range, I'll be making sure that the sticker on the back says it is!

Yeah - it's a very primal kind of fear when you're fighting off (or trying to, anyway) an unseen attacker (ie the gloves and the crowbar) and your family are upstairs!

And no, not near a big city. The nearest is Bristol, which is about an hour away. I'm in a tiny, rather idyllic village in the countryside (although I did for a second think I'd died and gone to Capetown!).

Oh my god - poor you. It's a really primal fear when you know they're in (or about to get in, in my case). At least ours were in and out quickly. Did they catch yours?

I can empathize - the practice I worked in Northamptonshire was burgled repeatedly and unfortunately I lived above the shop. The worst one I had to barricade myself in the lounge because they were through my downstairs door- had the coppers on the phone telling me 'we are on our way - stay on the phone and keep talking we need to hear your voice'. Was the longest 25 mins of my life. The village I am living in now is being targeted by scum from the nearest town, we have had 3 burglaries in 2 nights

Well, one has learning difficulties, so she's more likely to invite the burglars to her birthday party than be traumatised! The other (aged 9) surprised me with her reaction. I was taking her to school this morning and talking it through with her. I said that really, it is foolish in this day and age to buy a flash car that others might covet. Her reply:

"Yes, Dad, better to be flash in your heart than your car; who wants to be out-flashed by their car anyway."

Aawww! Brought a lump to my throat. Anyway, I'm now working on having a flashy heart

My impression is that the police are very good at supporting the 'victim' (we've had the local response unit, forensics, CID, a community support officer and a press officer in touch), but not really well enough resourced to do much about finding the crims quickly.

I mean, they put the registration plate out on the ANPR system quickly (but I don't suppose my real numberplate remained on the car for more than a few minutes). Beyond that, there's really not much they can do until the burnt out shell is found, or a car part turns up somewhere.

The insurance will be interesting. I am hoping they are honourable about it, and pay back the full cash price I paid, because we had only had the car for less than 2 weeks. But we'll see.

You know I'd probably find that even more frightening. I didn't actually see our robbers. Just a pair of gloved hands and a crowbar.

Flipping heck Arlo.... glad you're all ok!

Reminds me of the time when a skinhead man walked into our kitchen .. he had got through the side gate and let himself in.. he said he " followed the music" .. out of his face! I had to laugh when dad just put his hands on his shoulders and frog marched him out!

The funniest thing though was that when mum found him and shouted " David! " we all ignored her because we were watching the golf on the telly and we thought it was a daddy long legs! hahaha
