I don't use an umbrella company but use Hazlewoods as my accountants (they know our industry well) and put aside my tax and NI each month into a bank account. I switched bank accounts to M&S and was able to take advantage of a 6% savings account that they were doing as a special so am earning a little bit of interest on my tax money that will help to offset the accountants fee!

so have you just put your tax and NI in a savings account? I did it for 8 months and ended up worse off financially.

The umbrella was deducting a fee weekly for doing my payroll but as well as deducting employee tax and national insurance they also deduct employer tax and national insurance so I was paying two sets of national insurance which took a huge chunk out my salary and as you can no longer offset your expenses if you go through a umbrella company I was massively worse off. So even though I was a locum I earned less than a permanent nurse.

I now work as a fixed term locum and go on the practice payroll instead so the only deductions I have is tax and national insurance.

I have been locuming next to my current full time job and I love it. The money is better than that you would usually earn from your average permanent job and it also gives you flexibility on the shifts you want to work as well as great experience working within different practices. I am registered with an umbrella company who charge you a small amount of money each day of work you do and they do your national insurance and taxes so you don't need to worry about that. Some people set up a limited company but then I think you have to do them yourself or use an accountant. Let me know if you need any more help :)

The min for an RV. Is £15/phr, depending on the experience you have and the paractice the price changes also what hours you do if it's OOH then it's a lot more. I love locuming. I use a Locum agency that charge me a dayily rate per day that I work and that's it no percentage as some umbrella co's do that !! So be careful. I would recommend first time starting out going threw an umbrella company so they do all your tax and NI you don't deal with it yourself and once you have tried locuming and like it I would then become a limited company. It can get ry confusing so if you have any other questions feel free :). And the pay out it this way working one month 5 days a week is the same as working 2 and a half months in my last perm job. :)

RE: Locum

another thing i have been told to do is to put some money away from each earning so if you have a quiet month you have something in the bank to keep you going

RE: Locum

Have you got a lot of practices in your area? I am quite lucky as I can commute easily to manchester/cheshire/lancashire and theres a lot of practices needing locums such as the 24 hour hospitals etc. It is a scary choice, I handed my notice in on friday to further my experience locuming on a full time basis and i am quite nervous! It might just mean you working a variety of shifts at different places or there may be some practices looking for someone for a few weeks/months at a time. If you have never locumed before i would maybe do it while you have a full time job to see what kind of work is out there for a bit. I have been locuming next to my current job for over a year and only just decided to bite the bullet and do it full time. I have someone at to pay my rent/bills if I have a particularly rubbish month though so i don't need to worry about that too much.

RE: Locum

Thanku anything really as never done before, live alone so really need an assured monthly wage so just wondering if it's a good option

RE: Locum

I have been locuming next to my current full time job and I love it.
