I am a vet nurse who qualified in Australia. Due to a small amount of experience and hours in a practice, I have to work a certain amount of hours and undertake a written and practical test in order to be registered in the UK. It wasn't easy

RE: struggling to learn

That's the spirit! This month I was suppose to attend some consult with her regarding post op and health check. I was also suppose to perform the basics on anaesthetized animals. But she is calling sick all the time and it is apparently difficult to find someone to replace her such as a locum.
So I have been left alone with no vet so many days (and no other nurses) that I actually didn't perform much...

I do study on my own sometimes and ask questions when I am unsure. I try to be very good at theory at least..

I had a locum last week and I actually learned more with her than with my actual vet :D

Anyway you might be right. I should be patient and wait until the next vet comes in and hopefully the situation will be better.

I am also thinking about talking to my manager if it could be possible to work in another clinic that is a part of the branch.

I'll keep you up to date!

Thanks :)

RE: struggling to learn

Hi,

Welcome to Blighty!

Just a few thoughts after reading through your post...

1. If another vet is due to come on-board in a couple of months, why not wait for them and when they arrive, learn some new ropes together? I hesitate to say 'train them to your methods' as that sounds too Big Brother (!) but as you will know how the practice works better than a newbie will, and importantly know where all the equipment etc they'll want is stored, it should give you some status in his/her estimation and endear you to them. Nothing like being useful to someone and then getting the payback of them returning the favour!

2. If things don't change after the new vet is on board then, yes, perhaps consider moving so you can achieve the level of training/support you need

3. Perhaps, whilst waiting for the new vet, you could apply for jobs elsewhere? Just in case a plum role turns up. You never know until you start your research.

4. Going back to basics. Speak to your existing vet about how you feel and what you'd like to do, instead of what is happening at the moment. ALWAYS couch this in positive terms rather than a list of complaints - so something like, I'd like please to experience...(name the experience). Or I need please to achieve...(name the achievement). Please will you help me to improve my skills so I can be more helpful to you and the practice? If you plan this conversation beforehand and present some plans as to how/what/when you want to achieve, it is better as the person making the decision YES or NO has already got some (your) ideas to work with.

5. Bored? Get busy yourself instead of waiting for things to be presented to you.. find yourself tasks/skills/something you'd like to do. Research the 'HOW TO' and prepare an action plan. Present this to your boss and ask if you can trial it/start it. Keep things simple to start with to ensure success.

6. Perseverance. Maybe the existing vet has already pulled up their tent pegs (so to speak) as they are off to another job and are far less interested in coaching as a result (doesn't make it right, just maybe the explanation?). So again, waiting for the next vet to come along maybe the answer...

Hope some of this helps! Keep us up to date on your progress. We'll all support you.
