I was wondering how everyone sells Advocate in practice to a new patient we've never seen before. I know a lot of practices will book the new patient in with the vet so they can prescribe it and then they are okay for the next 12 months without having

RE: Selling and prescribing Advocate

[quote user="Arlo Guthrie"]

I do sometimes wonder if some vets understand this - I know there are vets who say accountability rests with them - not if you are a RVN it doesnt

RE: Selling and prescribing Advocate

my practice used to only allow 6 monthly issue for any patient. With having a 6 monthly health check. following this we used two reasoning. a prescription from the vet can be valid up to 6 months. which is why the packs are only 6 months,

all New patients have to be seen by a vet no matter what. as you do not know of any underlying condition. legally we vets have to see the patient.

RE: Selling and prescribing Advocate

Why not ask Bayer to come in and do a CPD for the staff?

RE: Selling and prescribing Advocate

If i remember correctly from a past VMD check, they advised that when the vet has seen an animal for a check up the vet needs to put a 'note on the patients file' to say they are happy for the pet to be dispenced adv and worm products for the next 12 months, this then gives us permition to dispence it and be able to prove we have a vets permition to do so.

Our new patients are also given free cu which covers the 1st year and any patients that need a check up as its been 12mth + are charged free or much reduced consult charge. Still think its good client PR to have free cu but does sometimes lead to the "oh while im here's" but think its worth it.

RE: Selling and prescribing Advocate

Our new patients always see a vet for their first visit.
If it's a new client then the first check is free (vet bobs into the nurse consult and does a health-check). If all is okay, nurse can dispense POM-V Advocate with the vet signing the dispensing label. Vet needs to make a record note on the client file re this. (Accountability).

Any issues discovered then a vet appointment is booked and this is a chargeable event. This appmt can be same day if any are available and client returns to the Waiting Room to await vet appmt, (obviously depending on the issue e.g. if urgent, gets seen asap). If future booked (obviously depending on the issue), again a chargeable event. This system works best if a 5 minute slot for the vet is booked out as well as the nurse consult. Then the vet has time to do the health-check.

If an existing client and needs a vet check to dispense POM-V Advocate, and it is JUST for this, then a reduced vet consult fee is charged (sometimes waived - up to the vet/practice owner). Any other issues, full consult fee charged. Client is advised of this arrangement when they book the vet appointment so they are aware of potential additional costs.

Alternatively, I have worked in practices where the nurse does the consult, charges a nurse consult fee and the vet has just bobbed in to do a health-check.

There's likely to be all kinds of variations to this theme as it really depends what your boss wants... so sounds like you need to agree on a practice protocol that everyone is happy with, it sticks to the law and everyone knows about it and sticks to!

It is hard when our boss is telling us to just dispense them in our clinics even though we know we aren't allowed. At least this way I can show them and they can see that it isn't just us nurses being funny and refusing to do it just for the fun of it. It is actually our neck on the line.

In other practices then, are you booking them in for a vet exam and charging a consult fee? Or are nurses doing the clinic and actually have a vet to go into the room and examine and then say it is okay to dispense?

RE: Selling and prescribing Advocate

[quote user="Alison Clare Hickman"]

As Sal says, raise the issue asap. If I were you, I'd refuse to dispense it forthwith. Action will soon be taken when clients start complaining they can't get it!!
