Hi Elaine, is your student an overseas student? Just wondering if the pre-registration OSCE she had to do is the same as that for the overseas qualified nurses. I recently had to undertake the pre-reg OSCE (June last year) so have experience of this exam. Happy to answer questions if I can!

A clinical coach is a good place to start so worth contacting a Training Practice.

Hi There, I am a Clinical Coach and my Student unfortunately failed her original OSCE's and was put in for the Pre Registration OSCE's which she also failed by a small margin. She has been given her marking sheets, but the lack of explanation on why she failed some points is making it really difficult to ensure she does not make the same mistakes again. Is there anyone who is familiar with these that would be willing to answer some questions for me? Thanks in advance.

Hi Zoe,

We don't have OSCE's for our vet nurses so no, you wouldn't have to sit them and yes, as far as I know your qualification is valid in Australia. Depending on where you go though, there's not always enough work even for our own home-grown nurses so a job can sometimes be difficult to find.

Hi I'm UK registered vet nurse. If I was to come over to oz to work would I have too sit your osce's or do our qualification count over there? Any advice would be appreciated. Zoe

Hi Jane,

I'm in the process of watching your YouTube videos but there are a couple of things in our pre-reg OSCE that aren't in the City and Guilds OSCE guidelines, eg cleaning a wound before bandaging. Also doing an abdominal bandage after cleaning a wound. Struggling to get the guidance I need from the practice I'm in, is there anything else I can look at to show me what RCVS standards are for these things and tips I need to know about to avoid failing? I really don't want to sit the exam twice at the exhorbitant fee they're charging.

Hi Jessica, have just had approval from RCVS to sit the OCSE but need to get another 1300 hours in a UK clinic first since I only have 1300 hours. I qualified at the end of last year in Oz and did my prac in two different vet clinics. One of my lecturers here was going to set up a weekend workshop to go through the tasks but I'm struggling to get a reply from her, so anywhere else I could get some advice/practice would be greatly appreciated. Also, would working in a clinic in the UK get me the practice I need at the tasks? And - how difficult is it to find a placement as an overseas graduate who pretty much needs to be on staff as a student?

Hi Clemence! I'm actually offering help as pet of my locuming services over here now, but happy to have a chat you first also! So yes, I passed! It is just making sure you can do the tasks in the allocated time, as on the day I found I ran out of time on a few. They're not particularly difficult, but they are precise in the way it is marked, so I definitely advise getting help from an RVN. There are no specific training days or practice exams unfortunately, which is why I'd like to start offering to help people to practice before the exam. If you're interested let me know, or go over your tasks with an RVN at work, and get them to mark and time you. Good luck!!

I also did my studies in Oz and I have to sit the same exam. I could take the pre-registration OSCEs on February but I am really afraid to not be ready...
How your exam went? Do you mind telling me what they ask and if it is really hard and different form Oz?
I newly qualified form Australia and only been in UK for 3 months...

hello, from oz aswell and did the pre-reg osces last year. found them quite easy- watched these videos though which helped as the blood tubes for example are different colours here.

I did the exam last year, basically you have to read the guidelines for the osces stations which I think you can get from RCVS. But the best way is to ask an RVN to help you with that. There is a lot of small but important tricks that might be different from where you are trained. Good luck.
