I am thinking about picking up the odd locum shift, possibly the odd weekend night shift with vets now just for a bit of extra money.

Does anyone do this and do I have to register with an umbrella company? How does it affect tax etc?

Thank you

RE: Locum shifts alongside full time job?

I found out that a practice about 15 miles away from where I currently work was looking for a part time nurse. I worked part time and my practice didn't have any more hours to offer me. I had trained in the other practice and had worked there for 7 years so I know what I was getting into. I knew the staff so it was ideal. I wasn't sure how my current boss would take it so the way I approached it was to go to him and ask his permission if it was ok to work in the other practice. I made it clear from the start that the first practice I was in took priority over the other one. Now I manage to get the costs of cpd split between the 2 practices which pleases both of them as it's less out lay for them and get they benefit of my extra skills. Both employers do my pay roll and most of my tax is deducted from my second wage. Set out the ground rules before you make any plans and pay your current employer respect by being open with them and discussing it with them first.

Hope you find what works for you!!

RE: Locum shifts alongside full time job?

Hi

vets now pay you directly and do all your tax and NI deductions so you wouldn't have to go through an umbrella company and save yourself some pennies

RE: Locum shifts alongside full time job?

Hi,

I do this and it works really well - I use the umbrella company i4, and they take out tax/insurance etc prior to giving me the money, so it is all taken care of. I was told this is the best way if you are only locumming very occasionally.

The other thing I would advise is just give your boss the heads up. Mine were very happy for me to do it as I wanted to gain emergency experience which helps me in my 'proper' job, but some contracts don't allow working elsewhere and you don't want them to think you are looking for another job!

:-)
