I would have to do it via either distance learning or blended learning as i need to continue working to help support my family.

RE: It's not possible to top up to a BSc(Hons) degree

Hey, I've just found myself in the same situation - from Leeds so the Edinburgh top up seemed perfect - can I ask what you have found yourself doing now?

RE: It's not possible to top up to a BSc(Hons) degree

Can I ask what you decided to do in the end as I'm looking at topping up to a degree. i have my cert ed so teach once a week and In practice the rest but would like to have a degree next Rather than a diploma.

I am currently doing the dipavn and then topping it up to the Bsc at Harper Adams. All funding by a student loan and when decided which uni to go to Myerscough offered similar. I also have a young family and work. Harper is 4hrs away from me. I just choose which study days I can attend. They are good to attend but its not always possible.

Have a chat with the uni's directly. I think Myerscough offers the HE nursing course instead of the Bsc but you would need to check

Fingers crossed you get it sorted

RE: It's not possible to top up to a BSc(Hons) degree

Oops, sorry, cross posted with you!

RE: It's not possible to top up to a BSc(Hons) degree

You can do a CertEd without having a degree (usually completed whilst in a teaching job). A PGCE is a post graduate qualification so you need a degree to do one. If you want to teach for a university or teach degree level students, you usually need a degree. To teach level 3 you don't necessarily need a degree, but colleges tend to look for it, so if it was a choice between two candidates, having a degree may be a deciding factor.

Did you ask about APL (accreditation of prior learning)? Universities can award you credits for qualifications already completed, allowing you to skip certain parts of a course. Might be worth double checking.

RE: It's not possible to top up to a BSc(Hons) degree

Yes, you don't need to top up unless you wish to teach other HE students. When I started in teaching and learning (am back in practice now) the college I worked for put me through the Cert Ed (PGCE equivalent) so if you could find such a position you can teach the apprentice (diploma) students. I would urge you to speak to other teachers before you set off - it's an amazing job but it will age you very quickly :)

RE: It's not possible to top up to a BSc(Hons) degree

i know a few nurses who have gone in to vn teaching, they certainly don't have the vn degree, but did to a pgce? not sure what its called, like a yrs teaching foundation.

RE: It's not possible to top up to a BSc(Hons) degree

Think it depends on where you want to teach but unis generally want a degree

RE: It's not possible to top up to a BSc(Hons) degree

I was under the impression for teaching a degree was preferred but not necessary as long as you can do clinical coaching? I'm sure dip avn can now be funded on a student loan. I would check with Myerscough. I funded dip avn half and half with employer and pay per module which does help as don't need to find years fees all up front then got top up year on student finance. I would def contact Myerscough to see if you can get funding for dip avn - I thought as long as you hadn't done previous qualification at that level you could. Make sure you contact vet nursing not just general enquiries as they will know more what others have done Re funding
