Do just staple the edges?

also for interest sake - at all the practises i locumed at in the uk we applied patches to the neck region but back in nz it seems the flank is preferred. what does everyone else think?

Re: durogesic patches

I learned a good tip at the weekend following our BSAVA/BVNA NI Congress

The patches can be stapled in place to keep them on. This method has proved very successful.

Also, be very careful when sending patients home while still wearing them - it has been known for some owners to have smoked the drug through a cigarette..........shocking!!

Re: durogesic patches

We also use them. As a handy hint to keep them stuck on place a blob skin glue on each corner of the patch helping to keep it stuck to the patient skin. Also if using an external heat source during surgery (such as a bair hugger or heat pads) these will increase bllod flow to the skin therefore increasing uptake of the patch causing over dosing!!!

We also continue with opiates up till at least 12hrs so that they can take effect. Can't remember the dosages off the lop of my head. they are available in 12.5mcg/hr, 25mcg/hr, 50mcg/hr and 100mcg/hr

Re: durogesic patches

hi violet,

we use fentanyl patches quite a bit and find them very useful for post operative pain relief. it takes 12 hours for the patch to work therefore we use vetegesic up until then and afer that there is no need for further pain relief. the patch says on for 3-4 days and as long as its bandaged up then the patient can be sent home. we always get the client to sign a release form to say that they understand what it is. always wear gloves with it

Re: durogesic patches

off the top of my head i seem to remeber a vets i once worked at placed the patch on and used vetergesic till the patch started working. as said that is just off top of head and not offical!! x x
