I did my OSCE's a couple of years ago and I have written on my task print out to use a yellow needle as it is thick antibiotic that you are mock injecting but I'm not sure you would fail for using a green as this is what most people would use in practice (I don't think I've seen a yellow needle in my practice!)

[/quote]

It may not lead to an outright fail but could affect the over all percentage rate for the task and thus lead to a fail

RE: Subcutaneous injection osce task

I did my OSCE's a couple of years ago and I have written on my task print out to use a yellow needle as it is thick antibiotic that you are mock injecting but I'm not sure you would fail for using a green as this is what most people would use in practice (I don't think I've seen a yellow needle in my practice!)

RE: Subcutaneous injection osce task

Second all the 'yellow needle' responses (I passed with that as well). I remember the specific 20g needle gauge recommendation was stated in the Data Sheet, and therefore it was this that the OSCE followed. However, a quick search on-line with the new NOAH compendium has stumped me as mostly, at least for amoxicillin preparations, no specifics are now stated. Hmmm.

I think you are to choose the biggest gauge, because its antibiotic? i did have this task in my osces, i recall i used the yellow needle which is bigger than the green and passed that task 100%.

100% spot on. sub cut antibiotic is yellow needle. I passed this with 100% too.

RE: Subcutaneous injection osce task

It's honestly a long time since I did my exams so I don't know what is being taught these days but I was taught (and still use) for thick suspensions (like antibiotics) or large volumes to use a green 21G needle but for small volumes of solutions to use a blue 23G needle. (For a small furry with a very small volume of solution I would use a 25G or even an insulin syringe but again not sure what the official teaching is currently)

RE: Subcutaneous injection osce task

Thanks good luck for yours also, I've been told different things for this task so that's why I'm unsure I'm just gonna go with green

RE: Subcutaneous injection osce task

My college failed me on this in my mock because I picked a 21g instead of 23g so that's why I'm asking I'm sure it should be the larger with a thick solution thanks for the reply

RE: Subcutaneous injection osce task

I think you are to choose the biggest gauge, because its antibiotic? i did have this task in my osces, i recall i used the yellow needle which is bigger than the green and passed that task 100%.
