Just wondering whether any locums in here are self employed, with umbrella or limited company? I've been told different things in all places about whether being self employed is possible. If some of you are doing it successfully, surely

RE: Self employed

I work full time and I have a limited company. I do all my own book keeping and PNLs (thanks Finance boyfriend!). I love having control of everything, and I put a bit through the business: lunch, oyster card, phone bill, some clothes. I am looking into insurances too for income protection and liabilities. The HMRC has great advice and templates for doing your own tax.

RE: Self employed

I've only just set myself up as a self employed locum (part time) and so far there has not been a problem with the practices I've approached (only 2 so far!). There are quite a few threads on here about locuming and it seems several people have gone the self employed route without any problems. When I was deciding how to go about it I got the impression you had to be working on a full time basis to make a limited company or umbrella company be cost effective.

RE: Self employed

I am about to start being a locum now and I am setting up as a limited company, purely because I do not want to lose money through an umbrella company.

Every potential practice that I have spoke to so far have been completely fine with this, but it does mean if practices pay late and such, you have to chase it up yourself, where as I believe an umbrella company would do this for you? ( please correct me if I am wrong)

It has been a lot to get my head around but I am hoping it will work out for the best!
