me to but so nervous about asking for more - 23 nurse experience, 9 as a locum. I should definitely be more confident about charging more but with all the differing rates flying around on here it is hard to know what to charge for the best.

I have gone direct with a couple of practices before. I'm now less likely to do so as I was once cancelled the Friday before I was due to start on the Monday, leaving me without a weeks work while I searched for other positions. Just something to be aware of!

Hi, I am in the south east and we pay £16-19 depending on experience. Can I offer a piece of advice though? As a small business owner, it is very expensive to recruit a locum (or indeed perm staff) through agencies. I would be much more likely to take on a locum that has approached me directly. It would be worth your while putting a good email together and sending an email to vets in any area you fancy working in, - even if they're not looking now they will store you details for when they need you. Good luck! I locummed for 2 years and it gave me all sorts of experiences I could never have got in one place.

I'm four years qualified and generally tend to work in Wales and South England and get £15 per hour no problems, however if I was going into a city - especially London I would charge more. I have been doing nights at the same rate, but with my current practice taking the mick with the amount of OOH I've been doing I will be putting my OOH fees up!

Not sure if this is directed at me but if it is, I have a full time job so I usually locum in my spare time on a weekend. I did do a Friday a few weeks ago and charged the same and I got paid no quibbles :)

£20 - £25 per hour? A veterinary surgeon locum fee is currently about £250 per day - and they usually work a 10 hour day. (NW England.)

If you can get that amount, then well done, but I doubt it is a commonly paid rate.

I used to get £15 per hour easily. And that's as a non qualified vet nurse.

i do locuming in my spare time as I only get a low hourly rate for my permanent job. I charge £18 an hour and never had any quibbles about payment :)

Hi, I'm down in the south east of England and as a night nurse with 11 yrs being an RVN I charge £18 per hour. I recently considered working at a different practice doing days where the most they would pay was £14 per hour for any day locum nurse.....as someone else said on this thread it really depends on the practice and I would def expect more if you are doing nights!

I locum in London for 12/13 an hour. 8-9 years qualified overseas with surgical and emergency experience. Have JUST become and RVN and contemplating new rates :)

I've checked the SPVS vet nurse salary survey results published January 2015 (but dated 2014), and for northern England the average hourly rate for an RVN was £10.90 ish. Obviously there may be a more recent survey but I haven't found the published results online. This info isn't specifically for locums, but is an interesting read about differences in pay relating to time qualified and route of qualification.

If I could get £25/hr, I might even be tempted back into locumming!

No offence meant to anyone, I'm on £14 an hour as normal nurse, just assumed the locum fee is always much higher

Ah ok. Do you mind me asking what part of the country though? I'm based around Yorkshire so presume my rate would be lower than London for example?
