I am just about to start my first 7 nights on an awake shift. Has any one got any advice on how to survive 7 nights on of working other than the obvious, sleep in the day etc.... I am worried that I will get to the third night and just burn

RE: 7 nights working

Eat well and drink plenty of whatever you fancy. I'm an avid tea drinker but when i get wobbly and cold sometimes usually around 2am-3am i down Pepsi - the elixir of life!!

I think some of how you go depends on whether you are on shift with other folk or flying solo. We have the most weird and odd conversations ever. If you are on your own, then i must admit it is harder.

I have sweets to hand as well as nuts for an energy boost.

By night 3 you usually feel and cope better.

If you feel like you're dying and there are no immediate demands go snuggle a patient, win win :-)

Catch a power nap on your break, 10 minutes can work wonders.

Does take a while to get your rhythm and find what works best for you.

Good luck!

RE: 7 nights working

From experience I would say:

Make sure you eat 3 meals a day. Sounds ridiculous but can be very easy to skip meals when on nights. I usually get very nauseous on night 2of 7 so have to try to eat bland food. Also, swapping breakfast with evening meal helped me as well.

Black out your bedroom windows to help with sunlight. Also wearing sunglasses leaving work helped me too.

If they give you a break in your shift try and have a little sleep. I had a 2 hour break so would sleep for 90 mins.

Hope that helps a little, and good luck!
