What counts as CPD?

Broadly speaking, any activities you undertake in order to further your professional competence as part of a planned development programme can be counted towards your CPD. You do not have to participate in 35 hours of face to face learning delivered by an external CPD provider.

Although this is not an exhaustive list, appropriate activities may include:

Clinical audit activity

Discussion group — informal learning set

Distance learning — on-line/ formal (assessed and/or moderated by a third party)

Distance learning — on-line/informal (not assessed)

Distance learning — webinars

Lecture by external provider

Mentoring or being mentored

Practical training — clinical skills lab

Practical training — wet lab

Preparing a new lecture/presentation

Project — working on a new project/in a new area of work

Reading — planned and documented private study/reading

Research — clinical

Research — scientific

Research — veterinary business

Secondment to another work place

‘Seeing practice’ — work-based observation

Seminar/workshop — external

Studying for an external qualification

Training — in house

Training as examiner/assessor

Workplace activities such as case conferences could also count as CPD activity if you systematically reflect on what you have learnt. Similarly, research and clinical audit activities can be recognised as adding to your professional development if you can account for how they have contributed to your own personal learning.

Private, documented, self-directed learning such as keeping up to date with relevant veterinary/veterinary nursing journals can be incorporated into your CPD plans and it is good practice to keep your own personal record of such activities, perhaps in the form of a learning diary. You can use the online VNPDR to keep such notes.

There are increasing opportunities to take part in online assessment, and other ‘mediated’ distance learning involving online tutors and learning groups. There is no restriction on the number of hours of online assessment or mediated distance learning that can count towards your CPD. You should keep notes of all such activities so you can account for what you have learnt.

You may choose to work towards a qualification, such as the RCVS Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing or other university certificates and degrees. Achieving such a qualification will provide ample evidence of engagement in CPD activities. Use your CPD Record card to make a summarised note of any courses you attend, secondment experience, and time spent putting together your case logs/reports. If you're using the paper-based Record Card, keep a separate file for your more detailed notes of your learning. If you are using the online VN Professional Development Record, you can enter more information about your studies, including your observations and reflections on what you have learnt; you can upload notes, reading plans or other documents; you can set yourself objectives in the development plan, and keep a note of planned CPD activities or goals in your personal CPD diary and check them off when you've achieved them.

Ultimately, the judgement of what should count as CPD will vary for each individual, and it is therefore up to you to decide how best to fulfil your own learning needs. It is your responsibility to keep a record of your learning plans and activities, and to keep documented evidence of participation in courses and other activities.

RE: CPD log

bvna/rcvs will be contacting nurses for input i think. but we don't have to do reflective accounts of our cpd currently. personal i log the time and what the course was about, and date. I might have been around a long time but I still have a thirst for knowledge. I am not in the habit of just doing cpd to make up hours. I spend a long time keeping on the ball with licensed drugs coming out that are replacing generics and also H+S (but have no idea how to claim this time) along with whatever CPD comes along. For example I am not going to plan and book on a CPD course on MRI when we don't have one, where I would if I was working in a practice that did, I concentrate on what is important in the practice I am working in at the time

RE: CPD log
we will have to write a list of cod we would like to do that is relevant, plan it, do it, and reflect on it
Actually, that's how it is already, for example:

"I was reading a question on Vetnurse.co.uk about what counts as cpd for RVN's. I read the replies and acknowledged that I was not sure of the full facts. I decided to look on the Rcvs website to find the relevant guidelines and discovered there was a great variety of ways in which you could gather cpd. In particular, I enjoyed the way in which commenting on the Vetnurse.co.uk forum counted as cpd and planned to do this. I posted a comment, and clicked the 'claim cpd' button."

Although...... reflective practice is cyclical, not linear (I used to teach it), so what has been said at the bvna talk is disappointing. Any point of the cycle can be the start, eg you attended a cpd event at your practice, after which you reflect on what you learnt, then you plan how to proceed (further research or implementing in practice), which then goes back to reflection (will it work/did it work etc).

The basic premise of cpd is being able to identify where you have gaps in your knowledge (which includes learning new stuff, revising stuff you used to know or updating things you thought you knew!). Attending a lecture and having a certificate doesn't demonstrate you have learned anything (I've daydreamed through enough to know that!), which is why we need to document what we have learned and how we have used the new knowledge.

HTH

RE: CPD log

so the plan is to make it even more difficult to maintain CPD requirements then - yep I can see that makes a lot of sense.
Time for a gratuitous plug for the VetNurse 'Claim CPD' system, which you can use to record time spent, what you learned and how you will implement.

You can use it to record any time you spend on qualifying activity - participating in discussions in the forum (this forum thread is a CPD-qualifying discussion about what qualifies as CPD!), reading news stories and other content on the site.

And if you spend time researching the subject elsewhere (in this case, you pop over to the RCVS website to clarify the rules), you can add that too.

Then, when called upon to submit your records, visit your profile and grab your VetNurse CPD certificate, which details your activity, and submit to the RCVS.

Look for the red 'Claim CPD' button above content towards the upper right hand side of the screen, adjacent to the search box.

RE: CPD log

You can include time spent researching a subject for written publication or for preparing to give a talk or lecture. You would need to keep evidence of your research and/or the finished product (e.g. published article or teaching notes). Not sure about blogs, but probably would be classed the same, in that you log the time taken to do the research for a piece, and you need to keep evidence of the content. If writing the blog does not require any research or checking of facts, it is of limited cpd use as you haven't learnt anything, so would not count.

Do you use the RCVS VN CPD log online? The drop down box for type of cpd shows you the type of things you can log. You can use reading journals if you record critical reflection of what you have read, and document what you have learnt and how you will implement it.

If you look on vetsonline, the articles in vet times and vn times are on there and some give an indication of time needed to read.
