Rather disappointingly the practice I work in as a VCA has decided not to put students through this year as there are problems with the college. So I am now, rather late in the day looking for an SVN job. And as a mature student it is essential

RE: SVN Employment

I have pm'd you.

RE: SVN Employment

Hi Louise,

I am 40 and I got the 24plus loan, when I embarked on my career change. It will not effect your mortgage prospects. Please give them a call they are really helpful.

Go for it if its your dream!! Life is too short not to do what you want!!!!

The care assistant course I am looking at doing is a distance learning course so this will fit in well with my full time job and allow me to also do volunteer work.

I will have to find out about this 24+ loan, is it pretty easy to get? Does it cover the full cost and can you only take this out once? Does this type of loan effect your credit rating when applying for mortgage etc?

I also live alone but I am currently on 23k a year so to go to minimum wage I fear would put huge strain on me when it comes to paying for my rent/car/bills.

Once you are qualified does your wage go up or is a VN stafting salary generally minimum? Ive just passed my Maths functional skills exam within a few months of starting it and completed a 2yr distance learning ANA course in under 1yr on top of working full time.

When i get to do my VN training I have to fund it myself with a 24+ learning loan. This is a loan off the goverment that pays for your course and you dont start paying it back til you earn above £21k. I earn marginally above nmw and live totally alone and will confess its a struggle but I also have a £200-250 fuel bill a month just to get to work and do atleast 50 miles a day.

RE: SVN Employment

You can do functional skills in English and Maths via Learn Direct or your local college and are usually free. I am currently about to re-do my maths and biology gcse whilst looking for volunteer work and also paying to do a level 3 veterinary care assistant course out my own pocket. All these fit around my current full time job which is well paid however is in a totally different sector.

I am worried that once I begin to search for a practice to do the diploma with I wont have a) the funds for the course.....do practices ever pay for your training? b) that I will be able to afford my house/bills on a minimum paid job. And c) will it even be a paid job. What is a 24+ loan I have never heard of this?

I know people say there is always a way but I am concerned financially that I can do this.

Any tips, advice or helpful info you could share with me?

Maybe its time that a rating system was brought in and ratings are gained not only on the results (percentage passes) but also the learners/employers ratings of their experience. I know I suggested it some years ago but as yet I haven't noticed anybody take it up. Perhaps if there was greater confidence more employers would train?

I hope you find something - like I say will keep an eye out for you.

RE: SVN Employment

Yeah I bet word has. Shocking. It was appalling when I was there doing animal management. Was hoping the nursing course and tutors were better. Not to say all the tutors are bad, some were really good. Thank you for your reply.

I have loads of experience, I've worked at my practice (specialist referral centre (hospital)) for well over a year and I'm fully competant in all areas. Frustratingly I took out a 24+ loan to do my BETEC Lv3 in Animal Management (D*D). Unfortunately the college my practice usually use is monumentally bad and has also extended the learning period from 2yrs to 2yrs and a term, which drastically interfers with the SVN's contracts of employment etc.

So I think the only way to progress is to find a SVN position elsewhere.

Sooooo frustrating!

That is a little disappointing for you!! Have you got quite a lot of experience or ANA qualification?

I only ask because I too am a mature student, I worked a few days a week voluntary (whilst working a paid job) to prove my worth and gain my ANA. I am now employed full time as an SVN and am paying for my own qualification with the Advanced 24+ Learning loan. Just about to sit paper 2.

I would contact them to ask about finance, if it's a case of funding, you may be able to stay where you are.

Hope that this helps, don't give up hope!!
