I'm a foundation degree student and we have a full year in placement to complete the NPL. Yesterday we had an email to say the Veterinary Nursing Education Committee have decided to reduce the hours required in a training practice from

RE: Training hours reduced to 1800

I did wonder if that was part of it? I cannot see a future for veterinary nursing at all at this rate.

RE: Training hours reduced to 1800

Think it has came about since the government changed laws last year (or one before). Changed it so that unemployed students on placement can only work 'for free' for a maximum of 52 weeks - This was all sectors, not just Veterinary. Previously the 2,100 hours was achievable, but with only 52 weeks, unless they can find a practice to pay them for the placement, students would need to work more than 40 hours a week with no time off. Hope that helps?

RE: Training hours reduced to 1800

I am not a clinical coach or a student but this worries me - there are some people coming out with a degree now ( note some not all) who may be fantastic on paper but practically they just don't have it - if the practical hours are going to be reduced from 2100 to 1800 how are these people ever going to become competent. Very Very worrying. I think its very unfair on students - its almost setting them up for a fail, with less time to come to grips with practical skills I guess there will be a higher percentage of fails which will add to the cost of training but then I suppose that will be a nice little earner for somebody on the resit fees.

Wonder why this has come about? maybe because of the lack of TPs? but then if training nurses hadn't been complicated to the point where nobody wants to do it anymore there wouldn't be this problem? The more I hear about this the more I am convinced VNs will become extinct in the very near future. The training is broken.
