We use sterillium and baktolan(as the hand wash), Bode have a complete hand care range which is much less harsh than the others there is a hand cream to go with called backtolin, our is supplied by DVH sales.

We had the lady from sterilium over at our practice yesterday. Two of the ladies at our place are really allergic to chlorhexadine (and everything else). They tried sterilium and it was awesome. The lady recommended using a very light hand wash (Baktolan) to remove visible debris and then using sterilium to take care of bacteria etc.

I really like the product, its really gentle on your hands and is environmentally friendly as it doesn't use any water. Our practice is going to change completely over to sterillium but obviously still use chlorhex for animal prep.

Hope this helps!

I definitely find it less drying than hibiscrub. I think it has been rebranded to Dermastel triclosan.

RE: Chlorohexidine alternative

Users can experience skin drying and cracking due to use of disinfectant soaps, especially in conjunction with skin scrubbing techniques and use of brushes where the natural protective oils are removed and localised inflammation can occur. Continued and repeated use can exacerbate the situation. We use the scrub to prep animals pre-surgery, for scrubbing into surgery and general hand washing between animals. I just wondered if anyone knows of alternatives? I'm currently using iodine (which is causing a similar problem, but slightly reduced). I try and wear gloves, but sometimes it's just not practical!

Many Thanks x

can I ask if it is chlorhex generally or one particular 'brand' the reason I ask is that with me it has been just one 'brand' that really causes problems

RE: Chlorohexidine alternative

I have similar problems, but not bad with Iodine. We have Sterilium at work for 'scrubbing' into theatre with. A previous deputy nurse got Carex hand wash for me to use. She done alot of research into it as I was allergic to Chlorohexadine and Triclosan. I use alcohol gels, the hand wash and for high risk patients, bites or scratches, or if I am covered in poo/vom/blood ect I will use Iodine also. I have found that my hands get ridiculously dry if I use Iodine alot during the day.
