But I am hopeful that the doctors I'm seeing will be able to help me get better

RE: Need advice on Veterinary nurse jobs and uni course

There is either day release courses where you spend most of the week at a vet practice and one day a week at college. Or uni where you will spend placements in practice and time at uni. Applications for this type of work are very high, so the competition is also high.
In regards to getting work experience you have to contact the practices, find out if they would take you for a week or a few days, offer to volunteer at a weekend some thing like that.

Are you in the UK?

RE: Need advice on Veterinary nurse jobs and uni course

Hi Nicole

Thank you so much for your reply. Thanks for your response with regards to the college or uni putting the students on placement this would still affect me wouldn't it? If I cannot physically work I wouldn't be able to be put on placement. How does the uni course work? I did work at a rescue farm I hope this is experience. Thanks so much for your advice :-)

RE: Need advice on Veterinary nurse jobs and uni course

Hi Selena

Thank you so much for your reply, I did contact some colleges about this course and checked up on the training but until i get better I can't do the course. With the experience at a practice that's a really good idea :-) but how would I go about it? I haven't checked yet to see what the uni course entails but it looks likely I would have to be well for that too. Would the vet places let me? Thank you so much for your advice

Here is a link to your post from last year.
Veterinary nursing can be very physical and fast paced depending on where you work, I'm surprised you haven't looked in to the course and the job in more detail since last year.
I know this sounds horrible but realistically I think your chances of a placement would be even more limited if you have obvious health issues or in a wheel chair. Why not get work experience at a practice for a week see how you would get on.

RE: Need advice on Veterinary nurse jobs and uni course

Hi Anastassia,

Firstly sorry to hear about your health at the moment, hopefully they figure out whats going on there quickly so you can get back on your feet!

Secondly I trained through college and was employed by a practice at the same time who put me through the course. However there was others on the course who were not in employment. They simply went between college, vet school and were put in a placement at a vet practice. This was the option for many of them as there isn't that many practices that are accredited training practices compared to nursing students. They still got all the hands on training etc just a different way of doing it. It meant they could also see how different practices do things - good and bad - which also helped them when getting jobs once qualified.

As far as I'm aware in regards to the uni course, we have a student who is doing her placement in our practice. She isn't employed with us and has been placed with our practice. I think you go to uni and they will assign you a placement. This may change places from year to year.

In regards to what practices are looking for, getting as much animal experience is a brilliant way forward. Asking around local practices to see if you can go in to see practice would be beneficial, go along to local dog/cat charities, even horse/farm work would help with your experience. Certainly in my practice it doesn't matter if you are just out of school or not, being good at communication is much more important so that the practice trust that you can speak up if not sure about something or can ask questions. They make much better students than someone who sits silently and you don't know whether they are taking anything in or not.

Hope this helps you in some way! If there's anything I've said that doesn't make sense feel free to ask as I feel I've blabbed on a bit!
