Over the hill on VetSurgeon, I've made a start on setting up galleries of clinical images for reference by veterinary surgeons.
FINALLY, I've found some time to make some progress with this idea.

First, I have created the new VetNurse Shared Images Reference Gallery

To kick off with, it contains some uncategorised images that have been uploaded over the years.

I have configured it in such a way that allows for the greatest flexibility to categorise images in the future.

So the gallery comprises 5 sub galleries at the moment: dogs, cats, rabbits, birds and reptiles, which I will add new navigation to as more content is added (for the moment, they all display in one main gallery).

Then in due course, I'll add further sub categories for each species. So for example, we might further sub categorise by disease condition, or by image type (lab / x-ray / in-clinic). I'll be led by you on that one, I think!

To start with, I'd like to keep things as simple as possible and ask anyone who has a photograph or video of anything interesting (clinical, I mean, not that shot of you paragliding in a superman/woman outfit last year) to upload it. Then we can see where it starts to take us.

Ben Ogden, could you start me off with that demodex scrape?! And anyone else with an interesting photo or video?

Just make sure you include any important details in the description box when you upload the photo or video, such as breed, diagnosis etc.

RE: Reference photos
What a fine example of demodex - albeit a rather crowded sample! I do believe that's the most impressive view I've ever seen in reference to the sheer volume of the number of parasites evidently on show! That must have been an incredibly itchy patient - out of interest, what breed was the sample taken from and which anatomical region?

The first picture is from the inter-digital area of a 1yr old jack Russel/Pug cross. Skin problems since purchase, been to two other practices with various tests and trial treatments, all having minimal, short term effect. Eventually came to our practice and there you have it. Samples from the top of the head, armpits and groin were 50-70% less crowded.

Sounds great! Thank you. Give me a few more days. We're SO close to launching the upgraded vetnurse website now. But should be back by lunchtime, and we might have the new site going in the afternoon.

I am one of those weirdo's who can quite happily spend many hours gazing down the lens of a microscope (albeit with aching eyes) and can quite happily identify a variety of leukocytes (WBC's) and erythrocytes (RBC's), however it has taken many hours of research on various online veterinary microbiology and haematology websites to allow me to enjoy examining various blood smears and haematology tests. By having a simple list of the various different types of white blood cells (neutrophils, eosinophils, leucocytes, etc) with matching images and a description of what their functions are and why they may be seen on a blood smear, I believe that this would be something which would have been a benefit to me when I first started and so would hope that it will benefit many others who are keen to be able to look down the eyepiece of a microscope and identify what they are actually seeing!

If this sounds like something which you would approve of, then let me know and I can compile a list of various white blood cells and red blood cell abnormalities which can potentially be used for the reference imaging guide!

RE: Reference photos

This is a brilliant idea pictures taken as we work would be more understandable I think.
I never knew that - I thought you had to get a special adapter or something. That's very good news.
I'll take one of a blood smear next week.
That would be great.

So if we went with microscope stuff, then the next thing is quality control - in other words to make sure that the photo someone uploads is what the person uploading it thinks it is (if that makes sense). I guess most people will get it right most of the time, but we might get the odd wrong one from time to time.

Two possibilities spring to mind - either that the uploader verifies it themselves with someone else at the practice prior to upload, or that I try and enlist a 'curator' from one of the labs.

So if I started with a gallery called 'Under the microscope', what sub galleries should I include:

Urine crystals
Blood cells
Parasites?

What others?

And for blood cells and urine crystals (and others), what sorts of different things would it be helpful to see and share?

Parasites are fairly straightforward for me, given my previous history with that subject, but blood cells are a bit above my pay grade! I don't know what makes one blood cell different to another, and therefore what kinds of different pictures of blood cells (and how many) we need to try and put together!

Just line up the camera lens or phone over the eyepiece and shoot! I'll take one of a blood smear next week.

Hi, its a great idea. Could you please include some lab images (wbcs etc)

Would be really helpful
Hi morrane,

That's one I'd have to get a lab (or maybe a few labs) to help with (rather than getting members to share) - but good idea, and I'll go and ask a few!
Parasites

Urine Crystals

Blood Cells

Wound Healing

Weight Loss

Surgical Preps

Radiograph Positions

Patient Restraint

The list could go on...
Thanks Ben Ogden - great help.

I'd like to kick off with ones that would be the easiest for members of VetNurse to take pictures of themselves and share on here.

What would you (and anyone else) suggest as the subject area that it would be a) easiest for veterinary nurses to take a picture of themselves and share, and b) most useful to have a gallery of images of for reference.

So, for example, I guess getting a photo of urine crystals and blood cells is not that easy, as not everyone is going to have microscope photography equipment.

Surgical preps, on the other hand, sounds like a much easier thing to photograph - but I'd need to have a description of exactly what photos should show in order to be of most use to everyone else.

And would surgical prep photos be top of the list of photos that would be easy to take and most useful to everyone, or is there something else you think would be more useful? (you said the list could go on!)

Thanks for your help!

RE: Reference photos

Parasites

So, for example, I'd email all members and ask them to take a picture of an interesting dental case that day, and then share on the site with a description of what the image shows. I'll give a prize(s) for the best, and that way, we build up a reference gallery of conditions seen in practice that all members can refer to.

RE: Reference photos

Sorry, didn't answer the question... Erm I guess for me I could put some photos of venipuncture sites on birds or reptiles if that would be helpful.... do you mean images that people need help interpreting? Or just interesting cases?
