We have 4 nurses including myself and we all get 4 weeks holiday. When we want to have a holiday we have to take a full week, not allowed the odd day here or there.

After a discussion with my boss and pouring my heart to her she said she'd see what she could do. The other nurses have been great and totally agree what the Head VN has said is so unfair. We do get 4 weeks (20 days) plus bank holidays and we all have to work 1 bank holiday week each and maybe the odd day over christmas/new year. After speaking to a previous collegue after we have been there 5 years we are entitled to an extra day's holiday, i've been there for 5 and a half now so the boss promised me she'll look into this and let me know next week!!! My holiday could go ahead!!! Plus it gets the bf off my back for a few days!!!! xxx

Re: Holidays :-(
It always confuses me when people say they get 20 days, thats why I asked......... me being someone who has rarely had the luxury of a BH, so when the entitlement went up from 20- 24-28 there was lots of whooping from me.

Re: Holidays :-(
Is the holiday entitlement not 28 days leave? or do you guys get the bank holidays as well?
Erm.....well.....we don't really have any. Nurses get 4 weeks per year/20 days - to take pretty much as they wish, be it a few days here and there or full weeks. One of our nurses lives 4 hours drive away from her parents, so often takes long weekends off. Another likes her holidays in Magaluf so saves it up to take in in the summer in a couple of holidays. Makes little difference either way really. They can swap shifts etc as long as they are covered and other staff don't mind. Holidays are booked on a first-come-first served basis but there is rarely any conflict for dates. Haven't had anybody abuse the system yet......

Sick pay (or, more precisely, the lack of) drives me barmy. We pay sick pay for 4 weeks in every rolling 52 weeks - and are happy to tell people to stay at home if they are ill. We don't want them to struggle in ill, pass on their bugs to everyone else and be completely ineffective anyway. Again...system isn't abused....have very few sick days taken every year. Maybe because people can take time off if they need it eh?

We have a low staff turnover, so this hopefully means they're happy with the system...but you'd have to ask Faye!!!

Re: Holidays :-(
Plus if we are poorly sick for a day then this gets taken off our holidays as we don't get paid for it (so we have the choice to either be docked a days pay or scrap a days holiday )

It sounds abit harsh but maybe it's just a knee jerk reaction? I should think it's worth having a quiet word with your head nurse to ask in private... it was her that made the rules? Was the arguement a stupid one? Did it leave you shortstaffed? How about the rest of the nurses getting together to discuss it and then going to the head nurse? I should think if you all discuss it between you and then take it to the head nurse it shows that you can be responsible for yourselves... you are adults after all and work as a team so should have some responsibilties among yourselves.... decide on a practice protocol for swapping shifts etc write it down, make everyone aware of it, even have a form to be filled in and signed by everyone and then everyone knows where they stang... Good luck!
