Rebecca from VN Times here...
As the countdown to compulsory microchipping continues, I'm interested to hear how you're all feeling about it - are you worried it will change things in practice? Will there be more admin? When the rep came to do a CPD on the new law she said it is compulsory that breeders microchip their litters of puppies before 8 weeks (can be done any time after 6 weeks) because the first registered keeper of each puppy has to be the breeder. She also mentioned that Anibase are not charging for the change of ownership from breeder to new owner but I guess that depends what company you use for chips.

RE: Compulsory microchipping's on the way...

this is how I understand it - a puppy needs to be chipped before it is 8 weeks old and most breeders do not let puppies go until they are at least that age so in most cases the chip will have been done by the breeder and registered to the breeder.

The Kennel Club says the following - 'The breeder may not record the new owner as the first keeper of a puppy instead of themselves and it will be an offence if they are not listed as the first keeper of their puppies on a microchipping database compliant with the regulations, such as Petlog.'

- I suppose its one way of tracing litters back to breeders but it is also a nice little earner for the chip company too ( I have had so many clients grumbling about this)

Here in Australia microchipping has been compulsory for years. It's great when it works, re-uniting pets and owners is always lovely to see. But...... there are always problems with owners not keeping details up to date. There is nothing more frustrating than a lost pet who's details are not up to date, who has to go to the pound to wait for their owner to turn up, if at all. Also, due to privacy laws here we cannot give out owner details to the finders of an animal. So if the owner is not contactable for a period of time, clinics sometimes will hold on to the animal until the owner is contactable, but they are not obligated to house the animal. At my 24hr emergency clinic however, we simply do not have the space to house multiple stray animals whose owners we cannot contact, and the finders often are unable to take the animal home, which leaves us in a very sticky situation at times.

I guess it does also require more work initially, when filling out paperwork etc, but it's worth it in the long run when lost pets are found and returned to their owners.

RE: Compulsory microchipping's on the way...

Brilliant, thanks Alison.

It's good to hear you see it as an opportunity rather than something onerous. There's no denying it's a shame there has to be such a price differentiation in price points - owners could not know where to turn, which is not ideal.

I agree the high cost of detail updating will put owners off too...

RE: Compulsory microchipping's on the way...

I'm happy about it - from the responsibility of breeders to ensure all pups are chipped to the reporting of any adverse event if a chip fails, right through to dogs actually being traceable back to their owners (so long as the details are kept up to date - but that's another exciting chapter in itself and could warrant a huge cover story form you guys!!!!)

I'm experiencing loads of dog owners coming out of the woodwork. It's a great oppo as well to do health checks, particularly on the older ones who perhaps haven't seen a vet in years. A chance for some updating and advice to Owners about lungworm prevention, as one simple example...

The only snag I find is that some practices and/or rescues are offering free chips, some a nominal charge and some the full cost plus profit - owners are getting confused / shopping around. I think it would've been better if we had clubbed together nationally and put say, a £5 or even a £10 charge, on chips. It's all about responsibility after all.

I still think the lack of a chip where the owner is not bothering will be rife but at least we now have something to act on if we find a dog without one (or one that's failed).

I'd like it less costly to make changes on-line to personal details as this puts a lot of clients off doing so making the updating of information, and the whole point of the chip, irrelevant.
