Hi,

i was 24 when i started training so my practice was unable to get my course funded. I did it through an apprenticeship scheme at a local college (which my practice organised). I was paid minimum wage for my age but my practice said that if I wanted the job I would have to pay my own tuition fees. through the apprenticeship scheme these are a lot cheaper (£1200 a year). So I agreed.... And I pay for the fees myself. I can't get a 24+ advanced learning loan because apprenticeships are not eligible for the loan.... However I have just paid £100 a month from my wages to the college to pay my fees.

maybe this is a possible idea for the person who wants to train in your practice?

Hi, my college sent out paperwork so might be worth checking with them what you need but if you go to direct.gov.uk site the application comes under advanced learning loans :) You register through the site and its very similar to student finance application, relatively straight forward too. For some reason it doesnt cover my OSCEs but my practice are funding them.

Hey, How did you go about the 24+ loan. I am in the same position as you. Happy for me to go one day a week but they are not funding students anymore? thanks

I think costs for me were around £5000 for the course and exam fees. I went through the 24+ loan which was pretty easy to apply for and set up :)

I got costs from 3 different colleges one being CAW and for a mature student the costs were the same.

CAW's website lists course prices if that helps - obviously it's not the same for everyone but it at least gives you a point of comparison?

Im waiting to do mine and the practice im at wont fund it because im over the age of funding being available and the cost of the course for me is £11,800 which covers everything and 2 resits which im hoping I will get a 24+ adult learning loan for. I wont start paying it back til I earn over £21,000. Because im on a contract and salary my pay will stay the same and I will just stay for a set period of time after I qualify to make up the difference in being paid while at college.

Hi, The student in question is just a few years off retirement actually and the practice is considering her wish to undergo the vn training but its proving difficult to get any realistic idea of the true cost involved. Its not that the practice wont pay for training its more about the student feeling like its not good value for money for the practice bearing in mind she wont have many working years left once qualified before she retires.

Hi how old is the student ? I was over 24 and the total cost was £7000 it's a lot less of under 24 I think at the time it was £800 each year
