I was wondering if anyone knows anything about ostrich tendons as a dental chew for dogs. Been working with a south african vet who is raving about them. He says the tartar just falls off while they gnaw away

Re: ostrich tendons

Thanks for all the info Ruby. Will see if our head nurse will let us order some.Hope this gives our forum something to chew on. tar tar eddie xx

Re: ostrich tendons

Hi Eddie

ostrich tendons are fab!

They do take a long time to chew ( mostly)

They dont make a sticky horrible mess

They dont smell

I have several clients who are sure that the chewing and gnawing does remove some solid lumps of tartar from their dogs teeth

My dog's love em

You can get them from Dunlops

LOL xxx

Re: ostrich tendons

My hounds seem to like them.

Re: ostrich tendons

Hmm I've heard about these, do most dogs like them? my dog won't chew rawhide so wonder if he'll chew these

Re: ostrich tendons

In my experience the ostrich tendons make alot less mess than rawhide chews.

You can make biltong out of most meats, game or domestic meat. You can buy it but it isn't cheap in the UK or make your own the proper spices are available to make biltong. Then either then hang it in the airing cupboard. Or you use a walkers crisp box and hand a light in there then hand your meat and the light provides the heat.
I have made it just marinading it in a garlic ans salt dip then hung it and l liked it. Or use Marks recipe (below) l just like biltong except chillie ones uggs thats just not humane to do that to any meat l want to eat.

Here is some tips on biltong:
Biltong Makers
Biltong Recipes

Re: ostrich tendons

You can get ostrich chews from dunlops my houndlings love them not convinced tartar falls off but mine don't have tartar!
