I am sorry if this is a little off topic, but I am desperate to have a career change, moving towards helping animals that have fallen victim to animal cruelty. I am very practically minded, so would like to be able to physically help

RE: Requirements for a career in animal welfare/cruelty mitigation

I worked my way up to welfare officer

RE: Requirements for a career in animal welfare/cruelty mitigation

Hiya, how far did you get with this?

Being an RSPCA inspector is very front line, but having a veterinary background does help. I am very animal abuse/cruelty identification minded and it is tough. However building good experience is vital, working in a busy hospital that cleans up the mess that society leaves behind is where it is at. RSPCA and Blue Cross is where I saw a lot of mine.

There is an anti-cruelty league in South Africa and many other across the world.

I am a member of APGAW have a look into that and let me know how you get on.

Good luck and make sure you dont give up, if you have the bug then peruse it!

Kind regards,

I had no qualifications and came from an admin background. It really does depend what area you want to go into

RE: Requirements for a career in animal welfare/cruelty mitigation

If you still want to train as a veterinary nurse then maybe look into a position at charities like RSPCA, Battersea, The Mayhew etc. Some charities like these will take on students and send you off to college.

I was employed by a practice and went down the diploma route....went to college 1 day a week for 2 years....so perhaps a bit more manageable?

Otherwise would agree with above, check out their websites and try some smaller charities.

RE: Requirements for a career in animal welfare/cruelty mitigation

Think most of the charities advertise vacancies on their own websites so could check these out first and could always e-mail them to enquire about vacancies. Also check out local smaller charities and rehoming centres as they often need staff.
