I'm out of the loop on this one - are RVNs allowed to place microchips or do you have to do an overpriced course so you're as qualified as the spotty kid down at the groomers?
I'd only be putting in chips into animals owned by my employer too

RE: People allowed to implant microchips?

I have seen this twice. one of these were with my own GSD puppy, I had to drain and pressure bandage his neck for a few weeks. will find a photo to upload also.

RE: People allowed to implant microchips?

I have never seen a microchip cause a haematoma in over 10 years

RE: People allowed to implant microchips?

[quote user="PSA-David"]

which is why I mentioned over on the other thread that i wondered if this training was a bit of a scam - I mean the chip united or whatever it was called - sounded very very vague and the person who called didnt know what CPD was

RE: People allowed to implant microchips?

We had a CPD meeting with Anibase last week and RVNs can only implant into dogs, cat and rabbits.
"Having checked with the VN Department at the RCVS, basically anyone can Microchip an animal as long as they have had appropriate training in how to do so. You don’t specifically need to have a qualification, just training."

RE: People allowed to implant microchips?

Thanks Rebecca, it does and it doesn't really, as I'd be microchipping a wide variety of species not dogs, but guess I'll assume it's okay until told otherwise!

Legislation relating to implantation
From the 24th February 2015 anyone wishing to implant microchips in dogs in England may only do
so if:
1. They are a veterinary surgeon or a veterinary nurse acting under the direction of a
veterinary surgeon;
2. They are a student of veterinary surgery or a student veterinary nurse and in either
case acting under the direction of a veterinary surgeon;
3. They have been satisfactorily assessed on a training course approved by the Secretary
of State for that purpose;
4. Before these Regulations come into force they received training on implantation
which included practical experience of implanting a microchip.
