If you're worried about hours, it might be worth signing up for the CVS MiNurse academy. I know it's not a certified course, but at least its something (and free ). I've only worked for CVS for 18mths, but have found I'm doing more cpd than I was with a previous corporate employer!!

Perhaps you could ask your regional director how he will explain to the RCVS that you and the rest of your nurses have not been able to do the required amount of cpd as this is a legal requirement for RVN's ? That may change his mind if he thinks he may be involved in an issue with them as it is not your fault if he keeps refusing to fund some of it.

I worked for CVS 2007-2011, qualifying in 2010. Never had to fight for anything. I was paid travel expenses (not accommodation) from East Kent to Norfolk to spending a day at Finn Pathologists in preparation for my practical exams.

After I qualified I was sent to BSAVA for the whole event, no problems, and this happened to newly qual nurses previously and after me- we only had one qualifying at a time, so maybe this had some impact...

Never had a form to fill in- maybe my PM did them....

WOW!must be a practice/ region decision? I have filled in so many forms- with very long explanations and still struggle to get it passed the regional director... I think I might need to present it to a representative of MiVoice to try and get some response- Nothing has been approved so far this year- so that will be 18months for 5 qualified VN's

I also work for CVS, I do have to fight but usually if I persist it is given. They have allowed the Exotic Cert at £1000, they declined the feline diploma ISFM as they didn't see it beneficial though. They have also allowed the other nurse to do Avian diploma part 1 and 2 along with a rabbit diploma.

I work for CVS and I've never had a problem, we do have to fill in a form but I just put why it would be beneficial eg, an ECC lecture would prepare me for emergency situations etc. I don't actually know what my budget is, but I usually go one day to both BVNA and BSAVA,haven't asked for anything else,sorry to hear you're having trouble :( x

I would look at IVC practices we have £500 CPD allowance and I've had no trouble requesting a few courses. They as many others are desperate for nurses

yep...exactly the same when I was with CVS. the CPD budget was either what was left after the vets used theirs or we had to complete a form to show how it would benefit the practice. luckily near me there was plenty of free cpd and lots of webinars. there wasn't really any courses that appealed to me that cost a lot of money to attend luckily.

Thank you Mark- I have never ever had to fight for CPD for a team of qualified nurses and sadly I'm not winning! - I would love to find a compassionate non corporate hospital- Sadly with so many VN's they accept this negativity as the job fits nicely with family, homes, nice vets etc.... We simply are to expensive and not worth spending money on! Perhaps lots of cheap staff would suit them as it fits the budget!

Easy. If he doesn't pay you CPD, you walk and get a job anywhere else for more money, and instead of paying you £500 for CPD, he can pay £3000 to advertise and recruit a new nurse! :) Oh, and he'll be looking for about 6 months.

(yes, i'm mean, but I hate it when people can't see the big picture! training always benefits the practice, upskilling your staff is massive for both skills and motivation!)
