I think a month is fairly standard, and your new job will probably expect you to have to work out that period anyway. If you are worried the boss might make life difficult, they might do this more if you 'leave them in the lurch' with very little notice (even if legally you might be well within your rights) and it's never good to burn bridges unless absolutely necessary! If you have any holiday owing, you can ask to take it during the notice period (so work four weeks' notice but be on holiday for the last week of it).

if you are without contract then courtesy would say that if you are paid weekly then one week notice, monthly = one month notice.

if he kicks up a fuss then I'm sure a suggestion that he's breaking employment law ......

No contract so 1 week.

I left a job with no contract the same day once, but there were exceptional reasons.

As luck would have it ive looked into this very recently. It really is dependent on what your contract states, but if you dont have one, it is normally accepted that you give a minimum of 1 month, especially if you are paid monthly. There is no set amount stated by the government. Hope this helps and good luck with your new venture :0
