Only just seen this reply! thank you for suggesting I post the email text for comments/advice.. This is the general text of the email I was sending to local practices ( with any changes relevant to individual places)

Dear......

I am an ex veterinary nurse, who, due to family commitments had to give up veterinary nursing for the last 10 years. I am now looking at ways in which I could possibly return to my former career, as I have always missed it, but having lost my confidence and being aware of the many changes in veterinary practice since I last nursed, would need to do the RCVS recommended period of supervised practice, in order to refresh my skills and regain knowledge.

I wondered if this would be something you could accommodate me for, obviously on a voluntary basis at your practice, which is very local to me. I have also nursed in the past at both PDSA and RSPCA hospitals so I am very aware of the difference to private practices and I found that I gained most of my practical nursing experience whilst working at charity veterinary hospitals, and always enjoyed it more.

I could afford to do one and a half days a week voluntarily, whilst supporting myself with my other part time job.

Over about a year, this would give me the recommended number of hours of practice and I would be prepared to put myself on extra CPD courses to supplement any in-practice training.

I have been in touch with the BVNA and they gave me a run down of the guidelines for PSP, and a list of local registered training practices, however your practice were not on the list, but it did say that the RCVS just need to be contacted if someone at the practice can agree to act as a mentor.

I have attached my CV which I have updated with any relevant recent experience.. I have had to diversify and work in other areas over the past 10 years, but most recently I have mainly been working with stuffed animals! .. at Manchester Museum as a visitor team assistant, which has allowed me to talk to the public about wildlife and animal facts, and promote conservation.

I hope you will find my cv of interest and hope to hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely

... That was it, with CV attached.. Do you think if I contact anyone again this year I should make any changes? Thanks in advance

RE: Want to refresh VN skills after 10 year break - cant find a practice. Help !!
