My practice wants me to do the clinical coaching for a student in Sept 2016. The student has applied for the course but to her surprise she has been accepted for Feb intake

RE: Need Advice!

The student has decided to wait until Sept when I can give more time and support. This is kind of a relief as I can now concentrate on said things.

I spoke to my college that is running the day course ( so happens to be the same college I studied at!) and they said usually 6 months but will consider RVN's that did really well at the course and good standards from the practice.

RE: Need Advice!

I thought you couldn't become a clinical coach until you'd been qualified for a year !!

RE: Need Advice!

Hiya,

Yup, having an honest chat with your HN is the best option at this stage as it will alert her to your concerns and need for support. Possibly approach her with some ideas as to how you want to achieve this. I find the best solutions to any barrier are the ones I've thought of and offer up for consideration - it saves someone else being stumped for ideas and/or suggesting something unpalatable!

I'd say, from experience, never be afraid to ask for support as this is the vital piece of collaboration between colleagues that can make the difference between success and a not so good job done - both from your own perspective (and sanity!) and that of the task focus, ie, in your case the student.

Go for it!

Ali h

RE: Need Advice!

Thank you for your response Ali :)

It's not necessarily the experience side of things (of course I appreciate more experience the better) as I have worked as a nurse for 7 years but took me 5 years to find a placement!

Unfortunately, there is no one else to take on the role of CC so it would mean she would have to start in Sept. Difficulty being head nurse does not work fridays and PM on holiday till Monday and the student is meant to start Tues! Maybe i'll give the head nurse a call and see what she says.

I completely see where your coming from and do feel that it would be a bit of a weight on my shoulders at this given time!

It's such a difficult position to be in, as I'm hanging someone else's career in my hands :(

Gosh, well firstly congratulations on becoming an RVN! Secondly, I feel that to do a good job for your student you ideally need a bit more experience under your belt as a QVN, (bit like we do after passing our driving licence, it isn't necessarily the Qualification but the experience gained on the road that counts...). Thirdly, you have a lot going on and, as you say, where will you fit your CC responsibilities in without getting stressed/over-worked etc etc?

Soooo, I think you need to have a natter with your Head Nurse, Boss, whomever is in charge that makes the decision to discuss your concerns to see if 1) they agree and can assign someone else or if not 2) give you the TIME and SUPPORT you need to do it effectively, efficiently and with a smile on your face, not a grimace and a heavy heart because it's a workload you can't deal with to the first class standard you and your student need.

Good luck.

Let us know your decision hun!
