This question may have already been asked, but I've been thinking of a change of career and am leaning towards becoming a teacher (for vet nursing). I've heard its hard work but I love being a clinical coach and hoping this is the move for me

RE: Becoming a teacher/lecturer

Thanks all

i worked for a further education college for 1 year, I taught Animal care and Veteriinary Nursing. I did enjoy the teaching, however the hours I had to do, to keep my head above water were unbearable. The PTLLS course was funded by the college and I attended evening classes weekly for 4 months. if I had stayed I would have had to complete a PGCE, which I would have had to fund. My holidays and pay were marginally better than in practice but not by a lot. I'm glad I tried it and don't wish to put you off, but may be dip your toe in the water first before quitting practice completely.

RE: Becoming a teacher/lecturer

for past 6 month I have been lucky to have been offered a small teaching position at the college where I did my HNC animal care course. I recently qualified as an RVN working part time and teach for just 3 hours one afternoon a week in the animal care department. Although only 3 hours it's alot of work at home preparing lectures and marking and chasing up students but is really rewarding. Hard work and tiring but glad to get the experience as its helped increase my confidence no end. Never thought I could speak in front of class of 29 people the college have said that I can if I want work towards the teaching certificate and I think they fund it but I'm undecided as to whether I will keep it up or not. Good luck with what ever you decide as I have certainly enjoyed the experience of teaching.

RE: Becoming a teacher/lecturer

Hi, I don't have any experience myself but i work with a vet who does part time teaching for an animal care course and really enjoys it. She's actually just been offered a full time job which she's accepted. Now she's got some experience she's moving onto teaching the foundation degree course. There is a lot of marking and planning but she loves the hours and holidays and never having to work another Christmas day! Obviously teaching the animal care course is a lot easier than than a nursing course but maybe it's an good way to start?? I know sometimes she gets frustrated as some of the students don't really want to be there but hopefully with a nursing course you would get less of that! She has also recently persuaded one of our locums to move to teaching and she is also enjoying it. Good luck if you decide to go for it! :)

RE: Becoming a teacher/lecturer

James Colver Cert.
