I thought we weren't supposed to split tablets as there is no guarantee that, using your example of 100mg tablet, each half will contain 50mg of the drug. it may be 25mg/75mg or 90mg/10mg depending on manufacturing.

It's not so much of an issue if the dose is for half a 100mg twice a day, as the animal will still get it's 24hr dose but what if the dose was 50mg once a day? one day there would be an overdose and the next an underdose.

Currently I have to fit it in alongside all my other duties and I feel as if I could do a better job if given the time.

RE: Drug ordering and budget

Yes always try and keep costs as low as possible. It is time consuming but worth going through items and checking you're using the cheapest brand that is available to you. Another thing that is very worth doing is working out individual costs of items like syringes, 1ml syringes are far dearer than 2ml for example so working out these costs and printing it out for everyone to see will help. You will always find if there is less of something in stock people will use it more economically than if there is loads. Look at costs of drugs, we often find for example one 100mg tablet is cheaper than two 50mg tablets, so encourage the use of larger strength and split them. You will find many cost saving ideas if you have the time to do it!

RE: Drug ordering and budget

I had an excel spreadsheet where I would note the week and enter the total amount the daily invoices came to when they were received. at the end of the week in the end column I would note the weekly spend . on week 4 sheet I would also total up the monthly spend so I could easily look over the figures.

at one practice the spreadsheet was set up properly to do the math for me and also worked out a percentage increase or decrease too for a quick view

RE: Drug ordering and budget

Have you done min/max stock levels? I usually notice quite quickly if things are running down faster than I expect them to. I don't keep laden shelves I must admit but its not that often we run out of anything either. A lot of stock went through ours in December even tho the number of appointments were a bit down on the previous year - must have been fewer animals but on multiple drugs. I know the week before Christmas a lot of stock was dispensed and I put that down to regulars stocking up so they didnt run out over the holidays
