I found what helps me the most is keeping a jar and each date I write something positive that happened that I am proud of myself for. Then when I am feeling at my lowest I get it out and read back all the notes I have made. My partner thought of it, at first I thought it was a strange idea but I tried it anyway and it has helped alot, its helped me focus of the positive. I think its very easy, particularly in our line of work to beat yourself up and focus on the things that didn't go perfect or over analyse the things you have said and worry collegues think that you are no good, and in doing so you ignore or those good things you have done, the clients you have helped, the animals you have made such a big impact on, even the ones you can't save but made their last few days comfortable and dignified. It has really helped me realise that I am still learning and thats okay and that as much as I put myself down (as my head nurse always said I am my own worst enemy!) the notes prove the good I have done and the amazing things I have achieved. I always worried about what people thought, it didnt matter how many times people said I was a great nurse I never really felt it, and then when I left my last place I got the most wonderful card and colleagues wrote me letters saying how they felt and it made me so happy to realise that I had made so much up in my head because of my anxiety, so thats gone in the jar too! Its never easy, especially in this job, but there are always people to talk to and more people feel the same than you can imagine so you are definitely not on your own xxx Any good practice will support you too,. Is there anyone at work you trust to talk to? Like Mark suggest vetline are great too :)

RE: Does anyone on here have bad anxiety ?

Most importantly it doesn't make you a bad nurse not passing first time - I know for a fact cos I failed my 1st year several times (a lifetime ago)

secondly you need to set up a meeting with your line manager to discuss this (take someone else in with you if you don't feel confident going in on your own) tell them how you feel and what you feel is the problem areas, your doctor may even be able to help by signing you back to work but on restricted hours or duties. If you have worked there many years then they know that this is not you and your quality of work so should be able to help.

Not sure if the BVNA don't have a counselling service

I suffered from sever anxiety prior to starting my raining position. I know what caused it but I couldn't rationalize the strange thought processes I had. I let this rule my life for approximately two years before I essentially had a breakdown. I was open with my colleagues and turns out a lot of them had suffered with similar issues. I rang my doctor and I was put straight on to Citalopram. It has done wonders for me. It gives me a clearer head because I am no longer overthinking the consequences or expecting something to go wrong before I tried. I still worry one day I will lose my job. Don't know where it comes from but it always niggles away at me. I asked for regular appraisals/informal meeting with my practice principal as I feel these allow me to be reminded I am doing ok. I know how terrifying life can be. Please know you are not alone and please be kind to yourself and find some help. Just think we wouldn't let our patients feel like this, we would do something to make them feel better, do this for yourself. Speak to your doctor and good luck xxx

RE: Does anyone on here have bad anxiety ?

Just don't know how's it's going to be when I return to work and wonder if they any technique to help with this ? I have had battles with suicidal thoughts but I am better now that I was but I still have some incredibly bad days. I am able to come to work everyday and get on with it now, not always with a smile and sometimes I can get extremely irritable, some days I go home a cry/have panic attacks etc but compared to 5 years ago when I started my training I am much better. I was put on sleeping tablets but they never helped. Now I have identified my triggers I can deal with them much better. Failing OSCEs doesn't make you a bad nurse at all some of the best nurses I have ever met have passed on 2nd or 3rd or never passed them at all. Pressure affects us in so many ways, but its all in your mind set. When I get through all the BullS**t in my head I can get down to the fact im a damn good nurse and I strive to be the best I can. Setting yourself little goals can help or at the end of the day try and reflect on the things you done well and how you can improve on the thing you didn't do so well instead of just thinking you're rubbish and worthless. It took me a long time to find a counsellor who I could trust but I am a much better person now. The important thing to remember is that you are not alone. I still have bad days, I have alot of triggers that set of my anxiety but the majority of the time they no longer affect my job. Other important thing is to keep your employers in the loop, with supportive colleagues you can find coping strategies to work for you.
